Brisk Blue Hat

A brisk walk in the chilly sunshine is only made better by keeping your noggin warm. Keep out the chill by knitting this slouch hat complete with a playful pom pom.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Child (Adult Small, Adult Large); 8.5 (10, 11)” / [22 (25, 28) cm] tall x 16.5 (17.75, 19)” / [42 (45, 48) cm] circumference, without the pompom.

Shown in Adult Small.

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Twisted Rib stitch after wet blocking;

18 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Star Stitch pattern after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Hedgehog Fibres Merino Aran (100 % Superwash Merino; 181 yards [166 meters]/100 grams): Glacier (1 (1, 1) ball)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular needles or DPNs; US size 8 (5 mm) 16” circular needles and Dpns.

Notions: Marker, tapestry needle, pompom maker.

Abbreviations

K3tog: Knit 3 sts together.

Tbl: through the back loop.

Special Stitches

Star Stitch

K3 sts tog but leave on left needle, bring yarn round and knit the 3 sts again tbl, and sl sts on to right hand needle.

Twisted Rib

Rnd 1: *K1tbl, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rep Rnd 1 for patt.

Pattern Notes

The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. It starts with a twisted rib brim, which can be worn turned up or left down for a slouchier look. The remainder of the hat is worked with a textured star stitch. Complete the look with a pom pom.

Pattern

With smaller needles, CO 84 (90, 96) sts. Join in the rnd, being careful not to twist the sts. Pm to mark beg of rnd.

Brim

Work in Twisted Rib patt for 20 (24, 28) rnds.

Main Hat

Change to larger needles.

Rnds 1-4: Knit.

Rnd 5: (K3, Star Stitch) 14 (15, 16) times.

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7: (Star Stitch, k3) 14 (15, 16) times.

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rep Rnds 5-8, 5 (6, 7) times in total.

Crown

Note: Change to Dpns when stitches no longer fit comfortable on circulars.

Rnd 1 (Dec): (K3, k3tog, leave 3 sts on left hand needle, k the same 3 sts tog tbl) 14 (15, 16) times. (70 (75, 80) sts)

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3 (Dec): (K3tog, leave 3 sts on left hand needle, k the same 3 sts tog tbl, k2) 14 (15, 16) times. (56 (60, 64) sts)

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rnd 5 (Dec): (K2, k2tog tbl) 14 (15, 16) times. (42 (45, 48) sts)

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7 (Dec): (K2tog tbl, k1) 14 (15, 16) times. (28 (30, 32) sts)

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9 (Dec): (K2tog tbl) 14 (15, 16) times. (14 (15, 16) sts)

Rnd 10: Knit.

 

Sizes Child (Adult Large) only

Rnd 11: (K2tog tbl) 8 times. (6 (8) sts)

 

Size Adult Small only

Rnd 11: K1, (k2tog tbl) 7 times. (8 sts)

 

Finishing

Break yarn leaving a long tail. Thread yarn tail through a tapestry needle and pull yarn through live sts and secure yarn end.

Weave in all ends and block to dimensions.

Make a pompom and attach to crown of Hat.
