Henley Pom Hat

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 18” / [46 cm] circumference x 11” / [28 cm] high, to longest part of earflap.

Gauge: 16 sts and 19 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st.

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Ecological Wool (100% Wool; 478 yards [437 meters]/250 grams): 8015 Natural (1 ball).

Needles: US size 10 (6 mm) 16” circular, US size 10 (6 mm) DPNs

Notions: Tapestry needle, cable needle (cn), stitch holder or extra needle, pom-pom maker (2” and 3”) or 2 pieces of cardboard, stitch marker (for beginning of rnd), 3 stitch markers to mark pattern repeats (optional)

Abbreviations

1/2 RC – Sl next 2 sts to cn and hold in back, k1, k2 from cn.

1/2 LC – Sl next st to cn and hold in front, k2, k1 from cn.

2/2 RC – Sl next 2 sts to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn.

2/2 LC – Sl next 2 sts to cn and hold in front, k2, k2 from cn.

Kfb – Knit into the front and back of next stitch.

LT – Skip the first st on the left-hand needle and knit the second st through the back loop, leaving stitch on needle. Knit the first and second stitch together through the back loop. Slip both sts off of needle.

Pfb – Purl into the front and back of the next stitch.

PfKb – Purl front, knit back

RT – Knit the next two sts together, leaving on needle. Insert the right-hand needle in-between of the 2 sts just worked and knit the first stitch. Slip both sts off needle.

Sl2-k-psso – Slip the next two sts together by inserting right-hand needle in the second st and slipping both off needle, k1, pass 2 slipped sts over st just knit. (2 sts dec’d; 3 sts dec to 1)

Rnd 2: *P1, k4, p1, 1/2 RC, 1/2 LC, p1, k4, p1, RT, LT; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.

Pattern Notes

The hat begins by knitting 2 earflaps. The second earflap is kept on the needle. Stitches are cast on after working across second earflap, then the live stitches are worked from the first earflap and the remainder of the stitches are cast on. The hat is then knit in the round as usual.

Using the long tail cast on method, CO 8 sts.

Row 1 (WS): Pfb, p to 2 sts from end of row, pfb, p1. (10 sts)

Row 2 (RS): Kfb, p1, k to 2 sts from end of row, pfkb, k1. (12 sts)

Row 3: Pfb, p1, k1, p2, sl1 wyif twice, p1, k1, pfb, p1. (14 sts)

Row 4: Kfb, k2, p1, 1/2 RC, 1/2 LC, p1, k1, kfb, k1. (16 sts)

Row 5: P4, k1, p2, sl1 wyif twice, p2, k1, p4.

Row 6: Kfb, k3, p1, 1/2 RC, 1/2 LC, p1, k2, kfb, k1. (18 sts)

Row 7: P5, k1, p2, sl1 wyif twice, p2, k1, p5.

Place live sts on spare needle or stitch holder.
Make second earflap, leaving sts on needles.

Hat

With circular needles and RS facing, work across Earflap as follows: p1, k4, p1, k6, p1, k4, p1.
Using backward loop cast on or the method of your choice, CO 26 sts.
If first earflap is on stitch holder, place on left side or circular needle with RS facing. Work across as for the other earflap as follow: p1, k4, p1, k6, p1, k4, p1.
CO 26 sts. (88 sts on needles)
Place m and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

Pattern Set-up

Rnd 1: *P1, k4, p1, k6, (p1, k4) 2 times; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: *P1, k4, p1, k6, p1, k4, p1, RT, LT; rep from * to end of rnd.
Work Rnds 1-10 of Triple Cable Pattern 3 times.
Work Rnds 1-8 of Triple Cable Pattern once more.

Crown Decrease

Change to DPNs when necessary.
Rnd 1: *P1, k4, p1, ssk, k2, k2tog, (p1, k4) 2 times; rep from * to end of rnd. (80 sts)

Rnd 2: *P1, 2/2 LC, p1, k4, p1, 2/2 RC, p1, RT, LT; rep from * to end of rnd.

Break yarn and thread through remaining loops. Pull tight to close.
Weave in ends.
Block.

Work I-cord (make 2)
With DPN, CO 3 sts, do not turn.
*Slide sts to opposite end of needle, pulling working yarn behind sts, knit; rep from * until I-cord measures 12” / [30 cm].

Pom-poms
Using pom-pom maker or cardboard, make two 2” pom-poms and one 3” pom-pom.

Attach larger pom-pom to top of hat.
Sew one end of the I-cord to the middle bottom of each earflap.
Attach smaller pom-pom to each end of the I-cord.
