Frozen Waterfall Accessories

This snazzy hat-and-mittens set has a fun construction. The cables on the brim of the hat, and fingers of the mitts are knit sideways, then the ribbing stitches are picked up along one side and knit away. You’ll love making this cute set that’s perfect for gift giving.

Gauge 28 sts and 34 rnds = 4″ [10 cm] in K2, P2 Ribbing, slightly stretched.

Materials

Yarn:

Fine weight yarn Quince & Co. Chickadee (100% American Wool; 181 yards [166 meters]/50 grams: Glacier, 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) skeins.

Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm): 16″ circular (cir) and/or double-pointed (dpn).

Notions: US size D/3 (3.25 mm) crochet hook and smooth waste yarn for provisional cast-on; cable needle; markers; tapestry needle.

Special Stitches

Provisional Cast-on Method

With waste yarn, beg with slipknot on crochet hook. *Wrap yarn around knitting needle counter-clockwise, then use crochet hook to draw yarn through loop on hook; rep from * for desired number of sts. Fasten off.

Kitchener Stitch

Step 1: Bring threaded tapestry needle through first st on front needle as if to purl and leave st on needle.

Step 2: Bring threaded tapestry needle through first st on back needle as if to knit and leave st on needle.

Step 3: Bring threaded tapestry needle through first st on front needle as if to knit and slip this st off needle, then bring tapestry needle through next st on front needle as if to purl and leave st on needle.

Step 4: Bring threaded tapestry needle through first st on back needle as if to purl and slip this st off needle, then bring tapestry needle through next st on back needle as if to knit and leave st on needle.

Rep Steps 3 and 4 until no sts rem on needles.

Backward Loop Cast-on Method

*Wrap yarn around left thumb from front to back and secure in palm with other fingers, insert right needle upwards through strand on thumb, slip loop from thumb onto needle, pulling yarn to tighten; rep from * for desired number of sts.

Hat Pattern

Cabled Brim

With dpn and the Provisional Cast-on Method, CO 15 sts. Do not join; work back and forth in rows.

Knit 1 row.

Work Rows 1–12 of Cable Panel 12 (14, 15, 16, 18) times.

Note: the length of the cabled brim should meas about 14¾ (17¼, 18½, 19¾, 22¼)” / [37.5 (44, 47, 50, 56.5) cm] from the CO edge.

Break yarn leaving a tail about 8″ / [20.5 cm] long.

Carefully remove waste yarn from provisional CO and place 15 sts onto an empty dpn. Use the Kitchener Stitch to join the two ends together into a ring, being careful not to twist.

Ribbing

With dpn, beg at kitchener seam, pick up and k96 (120, 120, 144, 168) sts evenly around the selvedge edge of the brim that has the 2 purl sts, pm for beg of rnd and join to work in the rnd.

Set-up Ribbing: *K2, p2; rep from * around.

Work in K2, P2 Ribbing as est until hat meas 1½ (2, 3, 4, 4½)” / [4 (5, 7.5, 10, 11.5) cm] from lower edge of brim.

Shape Crown

Set-up Rnd: *(K2, p2) 6 times, pm; rep from * 3 (4, 4, 5, 6) more times.
Dec Rnd 1: *K2, p2tog, (k2, p2) to m, sm; rep from * to end – 4 (5, 5, 6, 7) sts dec’d.
Next Rnd: *K2, p1, (k2, p2) to m, sm; rep from * to end.
Dec Rnd 2: *K2, k2tog, k1, p2, (k2, p2) to m, sm; rep from * to end – 4 (5, 5, 6, 7) sts dec’d.
Next Rnd: *K2, (k2, p2) to m, sm; rep from * to end.

Mitts Pattern

Cabled Band

With dpn and the Provisional Cast-on Method, CO 15 sts. Do not join; work back and forth in rows.

Knit 1 row.

Work Rows 1–12 of Cable Panel 6 times.

Note: the length of the cabled band should meas about 7½” / [19 cm] from CO edge.

Break yarn leaving a tail about 8″ / [20.5 cm] long.

Carefully remove waste yarn from provisional CO and place 15 sts onto an empty dpn. Use the Kitchener Stitch to join the two ends together into a ring, being careful not to twist.

Ribbing

With dpn, beg at kitchener seam, pick up and k52 sts evenly around the selvedge edge of the band that has the 2 purl sts, pm for beg of rnd and join to work in the rnd.

Set-up Ribbing: *K1, p2, k1; rep from * around.

Rep the last rnd 2 more times, ending the last rnd 1 st before end of rnd.

Next Rnd: BO 2 sts removing m, work to end as est, pm for new beg of rnd – 50 sts.

Thumb Gusset

Using the Backward Loop Cast-on Method, CO 22 sts, pm for thumb gusset, join to work in the rnd and work to end of rnd as est – 72 sts.

Next Rnd: K2, (p2, k2) to m, sm, p2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.

Work 2 more rnds as est.

Shape Thumb Gusset

Dec Rnd: K1, ssk, work as est to 3 sts before m, k2tog, k1, sm, work to end as est – 2 sts dec’d; 70 sts.

(Work 3 rnds even, then rep dec rnd) 3 times – 64 sts rem.

(Work 1 rnd even, then rep dec rnd) 5 times – 54 sts rem.

Work 1 rnd even.

Next Dec Rnd: Remove beg of rnd m, ssk, replace beg of rnd m, k2tog, remove m, work to end as est – 52 sts rem.

Cont working even in K2, P2 Ribbing until mitt meas 8″ / [20.5 cm] from the finger edge of the cabled band.

BO all sts loosely in rib.

Make a second mitt the same as the first.

Thumb

With RS facing and dpn, beg at center of thumb gusset BO sts, pick up and k1 st in the BO st, 1 st in the gap between the BO st and the CO sts, then 22 sts along the CO sts, 1 st in the gap, then 1 st in the rem BO st – 26 sts.

Dec Rnd: P1, k2tog, (k1, p2, k1) to last 3 sts, ssk, p1 – 2 sts dec’d; 24 sts rem.

Cont working in ribbing as est until thumb meas 1″ from pick-up rnd.

BO all sts loosely in rib.

Rep for second mitt.

Finishing
