Butterfly Wing Stole

Inspired by the dramatic beauty that can be found in nature, this stole adds grace to any dress, formal or casual. The design features a center panel of eyelet motifs flanked by cascading, petal-like curves that resemble ornate butterfly wings.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 61” long x 11½” wide

Gauge: 24 sts and 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn:

Super fine yarn weight Holst Garn Tides Uld Silk 70/30 (70% Wool, 30% Silk; 314 yards [287 meters]/ 50 grams): 63420 Pearl, 2 balls.

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm): straight needles, plus.

Notions: Tapestry needle; five 1” buttons; one extra US size5 (3.75 mm) needle for 3-needle bind off

Special Stitches

sssk – slip 3 stitches knitwise on to the right-hand needle, knit 3 stitches together.

k3tog – knit 3 stitches together.

The stole is worked in two halves and joined using a 3-needle bind off.

First Half

Using the long tail cast-on method, CO 72 sts.

Next Row: Knit.

Row 1: K2, yo, k5, ssk, k5, k2tog, (k5, yo) twice, k1, yo, k5, sssk, k2, k3tog, k5, yo, k1, (yo, k5) twice, ssk, k5, k2tog, k5, yo, k2.

Row 2 and all even numbered rows: K1, p to last st, k1.

Row 3: K3, yo, k5, ssk, k3, k2tog, k5, yo, k7, yo, k1, yo, k4, sssk, k2, k3tog, k4, yo, k1, yo, k7, yo, k5, ssk, k3, k2tog, k5, yo, k3.

Row 5: K4, yo, k5, ssk, k1, k2tog, k5, yo, k9, yo, k1, yo, k3, sssk, k2, k3tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k9, yo, k5, ssk, k1, k2tog, k5, yo, k4.

Next Row: Knit.

Place sts onto spare needle ready for 3-needle bind off.

Work Second Half same as First Half.

Graft the two halves together using 3-needle bind off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Soak and gently block to measurements. yarn ball
