Warm Weather Whimsy Scarf

Take a day off and enjoy nature’s floral gifts, and make sure your wardrobe is prepared for the occasion! This openwork scarf features a German braid pattern, coin cables, and satin ribbon fringe.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Approximately 7” wide x 46” long

Gauge: 22 sts and 23 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stitch patt after blocking

Gauge is not critical to this project, but may affect the amount of yarn needed.

Materials

Yarn:

Lace weight yarn Cascade Forest Hills (51% Silk, 49% Merino Wool; 785 yards [717.5 meters]/100 grams): #05 Sugar Coral, 1 ball

Needles: US size 8 (5mm): straight or circular

Notions: Tapestry needle; stitch markers; cable needle (cn); 1 spool (10 yards and 1/8” wide) double-faced satin ribbon; US size F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook

Abbreviations

CDD (Centered Double Decrease): Sl 2 sts tog knitwise to RH needle, knit next st, pass 2 sl sts over knit st. Center st will lie on top of other 2 sts.

TCC (Twice Crossed Cable): Sl 1 to cn and hold in front. Knit 5th st on LH needle but do not remove. Knit sts 1-4 and remove from LH needle, sl st #5 off needle, k1 from cn.

Twisted Braids Pattern (multiple of 9 sts + 5)

Rows 1 and 5 (RS): K1, (yo, CDD, yo, k6) 3 times, yo, CDD, yo, k1.

Rows 2, 4 and 6 (WS): Purl.

Row 3: K1, (yo, CDD, yo, TCC) 3 times, yo, CDD, yo, k1.

Rep Rows 1-6 for patt.

Pattern Note

Two strands of yarn are held tog for entire scarf.

First st of every row is slipped purlwise.

Scarf

With 2 strands of yarn held tog, CO 38 sts.

Slipping first st of each row purlwise, knit 3 rows.

Set-up Pattern

Next Row (RS): Sl 1, k2, pm, work Row 1 of Twisted Braids Pattern over next 32 sts, pm, k3.

Keeping 3 sts at each end in Garter St and rem sts in Twisted Braids Pattern, work even until scarf meas approx. 45” from CO edge, ending with Row 4.

Knit 3 rows.

BO all sts.

Fringe

Cut 26 strands of ribbon, each 12” long. Fold 1 strand in half and with WS facing, insert crochet hook in first st of CO edge, pull fold of ribbon through st, insert ends in loop and pull tightly. Attach fringe in every 3rd stitch of CO and BO edges. Trim ends evenly.
