Fleece Navidad the Alpaca

Fleece gets her holiday vibes from her red and white striped bias scarf. A nicely textured yarn gives her a curly appearance. She is shaped with simple increases and decreases, and worked in the round in several pieces that are sewn together.

Size: 15” tall

Gauge: 14 sts and 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st with MC

Materials

Yarn: Lion Brand Homespun (100% Acrylic; 185 yards [169 meters]/170 grams): 412 Pearls (MC, 1 ball)

Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 (100% Wool; 220 yards [201 meters]/100 grams): 8010 Natural (CC1, 1 ball), 4002 Jet (CC2, 1 ball), 8895 Christmas Red (CC3, 1 ball)

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) DPNs

Notions: Polyester fiberfill, tapestry needle, 12mm black safety eyes.

Head

With CC1, CO 3 sts.

Rnd 1: Kfb 3 times, distribute evenly over DPNs and join to work in the rnd. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Kfb 6 times. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: (K1, kfb) 6 times. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: (K2, kfb) 6 times. (24 sts)

Rnd 5: (K3, kfb) 6 times. (30 sts)

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7: (K4, kfb) 6 times. (36 sts)

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9: K18, m1, k12, m1, k6. (38 sts)

Rnd 10: K18, kfb, k12, kfb, k6. (40 sts)

Cut yarn and switch to MC.

Rnd 11: Knit.

Rnd 12: K19, m1, k14, m1, k7. (42 sts)

Rnds 13-30: Knit.

Rnd 31: (K1, k2tog) 14 times. (28 sts)

Rnd 32: Knit.

Place safety eyes in Rnd 13. Find the correct placement by lining them up with the two “M1” sts in Rnd 12.

Stuff Head.

Rnd 33: K2tog 14 times. (14 sts)

Rnd 34: K2tog 7 times. (7 sts)

Cut yarn, thread through rem sts and pull tight.

Ears (make 2)

With CC1, CO 20 sts.

Rnd 1: Knit. Distribute over DPNs and work in the rnd.

Rnds 2-4: Knit.

Rnd 5: (K2tog, k8) 2 times. (18 sts)

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7: (K2tog, k7) 2 times. (16 sts)

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9: (K2tog, k6) 2 times. (14 sts)

Rnd 10: (K2tog, k5) 2 times. (12 sts)

Rnd 11: (K2tog, k2, k2tog) 2 times. (8 sts)

Cut yarn, thread through rem sts and pull tight.

Body

With MC, CO 18 sts.

Rnd 1: Knit. Distribute over DPNs and join to work in the rnd.

Rnds 2-15: Knit.

Rnd 16: (Kfb, k7, kfb) 2 times. (22 sts)

Rnds 17-19: Knit.

Rnd 20: (Kfb, k9, kfb) 2 times. (26 sts)

Rnds 21-23: Knit.

Rnd 24: (Kfb, k11, kfb) 2 times. (30 sts)

Rnds 25-27: Knit.

Rnd 28: (Kfb, k13, kfb) 2 times. (34 sts)

Rnds 29-31: Knit.

Rnd 32: (Kfb, k15, kfb) 2 times. (38 sts)

Rnd 33: Knit.

BO all sts.

Limbs (make 4)

With CC1, CO 18 sts.

Rnd 1: Knit. Distribute over DPNs and join to work in the rnd.

Rnds 2-20: Knit.

Cut yarn and switch to CC2.

Rnds 21-23: Knit.

Rnd 24: (K1, k2tog) 6 times. (12 sts)

Rnd 25: Knit.

Rnd 26: K2tog 6 times. (6 sts)

Cut yarn, thread through rem sts and pull tight.

Scarf

With CC3, CO 12 sts.

Row 1: Knit.

Row 2: Kfb, k9, k2tog.

With CC1, rep Rows 1-2.

Continue to work these 2 rows, switching between CC3 and CC1 every 2 rows until Scarf meas 15” or desired length, ending with a CC3 row.

BO all sts.

Weave in ends.

Finishing

Sew CO edge of Body to the bottom of Head. Stuff Body, sew bottom edge of Body shut with a flat seam.

Fold CO edge of Ears in half widthwise and sew to top of Head with approximately 8 sts between them.

Stuff Limbs, roll between palms to even out the stuffing and sew CO edge of Limbs to Body at shoulders (being sure to leave a long neck) and hips.

Embroider a wide “Y” shape for the nose and mouth, and eyelashes with CC2.

Tie Scarf around the neck.
