Caribbean Cables Scarf

The cable and lace motifs in this scarf look like fish swimming in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean. Wear this scarf with a pretty dress of over a simple summer tee.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Scarf: 6” x 60”; Wrap: 18” x 72” approximate size

Gauge: 26 sts and 27 rows = 3 3/4” x 3 3/8” in pattern after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project.

Materials

Yarn:

Super Fine Weight Yarn Knit Picks Palette (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 231 yards [211 meters]/50 grams): # 25095 Caribbean, 2 skeins (Scarf), 7 skeins (Wrap)

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle; cable needle

Special Abbreviations

C2/3R (Cable 2 over 3 Right) – move next 3 stitches to back on cable needle, knit next 2 stitches, knit stitches from cable needle

C2/3L (Cable 2 over 3 Left) – move next 2 stitches to front on cable needle, knit next 3 stitches, knit stitches from cable needle

C3/3L (Cable 3 over 3 Left) – move next 3 stitches to front on cable needle, knit next 3 stitches, knit stitches from cable needle

K2tog – Knit two stitches together

SSK – slip two stitches one at a time as if to knit, insert left needle back into the stitches and knit them together

YO – yarn over

Scarf (work from chart)

Work over 1½ repeats of chart

CO 44 sts

Edging: Knit 5 rows. You will have 3 garter ridges on the right side.

Row 1 (RS): K2, work chart sts 1-26, then repeat sts 1-14 once more, k2.
Row 2 (WS): K3, (p12, k1) twice, p12, k3. Even numbered rows are not shown on the chart.

Repeat these last two rows in the same manner for each row of the chart, repeating the entire chart 17 times or until desired length.

Knit 5 rows. You should have 3 garter ridges on the right side. Bind off.

Wrap (work from chart)

Work over 4½ repeats of chart

CO 128 sts.

Edging: Knit 7rows. You will have 5 garter ridges on the right side.

Row 1 (RS): K5, work chart sts 1-26 four times, repeat sts 1-14 once more, k5.
Row 2 (WS): K6, (p12, k1) eight times, p12, k6. Even numbered rows are not shown on the chart.

Finishing

Wet block, stretching to open up yarn-overs. Size will vary with how aggressively you stretch the work while blocking. Avoid stretching so hard that you lose the lift of the cables.yarn ball
