Bougainvillea Flower Scarf

Stroll the scenic route or enjoy a breeze from the balcony with the Bougainvillea Scarf. Inspired by the warm weather, this cool-cotton scarf has the color and pattern reminiscent of the Bougainvillea flower.

Size: 7” wide x 63” long

Gauge: 24.5 sts and 26 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Pattern C after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Rico Designs Essentials Cotton DK (100% Cotton; 142 yards [130 meters]/50 grams): Fuschia (3 balls)

Needles: US 2½ (3.0mm) straight

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker.

Special Stitches

M1l (make 1 left leaning): Make one st by picking up the strand between the sts from the front onto LH needle and knitting it through back.

M1r (make 1 right leaning): Make one st by picking up the strand between the sts from the back onto LH needle and knitting it.

Center Double Decrease (CDD)

Slip next 2 sts from LH needle to RH needle as if to knit two together. Knit next stitch on the left knitting needle. Insert LH needle into two slipped sts and pass them over first st and off needle.

Pattern A

Row 1 (RS): K2, (m1l, k4, cdd, k4, m1r, k1) 3 times, m1l, k4, cdd, k4, m1r, k2.

Row 2 (WS): K2, p47, k2.

Rows 3-8: Rep Rows 1-2.

Row 9: K6, (cdd, k9) 3 times, cdd, k6. (43 sts)

Row 10: Knit.

Pattern B

Row 1 (RS): K2, (k2tog, yo, k4) 6 times, k2tog, yo, k3. (43 sts)

Row 2 (WS): K2, p39, k2.

Row 3: K4, (yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1) 5 times, yo, ssk, k, k2tog, yo, k4.

Row 4: Rep Row 2.

Row 5: K5, (yo, cdd, yo, k3) 5 times, yo, cdd, yo, k5.

Row 6: Rep Row 2.

Row 7: K5, (k2tog, yo, k4) 5 times, k2tog, yo, k6.

Row 8: Rep Row 2.

Row 9: K4, (k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1) 5 times, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k4.

Row 10: Rep Row 2.

Row 5: K3, (k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1) 5 times, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k2.

Row 7: Rep Row 3.

Row 9: Knit.

Row 11: K8, (yo, ssk, k4) 5 times, yo, ssk, k3.

Row 13: K6, (k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1) 5 times, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k2.

Row 15: Rep Row 11.

Row 16: K2, p39, k2.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in two pieces then grafted together in the middle using Kitchener stitch. This ensures the ends are symmetrical.

Pattern

First Half

CO 51 sts.

Knit 4 rows.

Work one rep of Pattern A from chart or written instructions.

Work one rep of Pattern B from chart or written instructions.

Work 10 reps of Pattern C from chart or written instructions.

Rep Rows 1-15 of Pattern C once more.

Break yarn, leaving a long tail, and place all live sts on st holder.

Second Half

Work as for First Half to end of Pattern B section.

Work 11 reps of Pattern C, then rep Rows 1-9 of Pattern C once more.

Break yarn, leaving a long tail.

Finishing

With RS facing, join the two halves using Kitchener stitch.

Weave in ends.

Block to measurements, ensuring the ends are blocked to points.
