Naomi Mittens

The Naomi Mittens have a deeply textured design worked with Aran weight yarn for a super-quick and satisfying project. Calibrated decreases gently curve the garter ribbing to a rounded top to complete the look.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 8” hand circumference x 10” length.

Gauge: 15 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st

Materials

Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Encore Chunky (75% Acrylic, 25% Wool; 143 yards [131 meters]/100 grams): #658 Blue Heather (MC, 1 ball), #194 Medium Grey (CC, 1 ball)

Needles: US size 9 (5.5 mm) two 16” or one 40” circular; US size 9 (5.5 mm) a set of DPNs

Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, scrap yarn or stitch holder for reserving thumb stitches

Abbreviations

S2kp: Slip two stitches together knitwise to right needle; knit the next st, then pass the two slipped stitches together over the knit stitch.

Rnd 1: *P2, k2; rep from * to end.

Rnd 2: Knit all sts.

Rep Rnds 1-2 for patt.

Thumb Gusset

Rnd 1: K19, pm, M1, pm, k to end. (1 st inc’d) 

Note: From now on, all Thumb Gusset increases occur inside the two Thumb Gusset markers. Slip all markers as you reach them.

Rnd 2: (P2, k2) 4 times, p2, k to end.

Rnd 3: K19, sl m, M1, k to m, M1, sl m, k to end.

Rep Rnds 2-3 until there are 9 sts between m, ending after Rnd 2.

Reserve Thumb Sts

Next Rnd: K to first Thumb Gusset m, remove m, put next 9 sts onto scrap yarn or stitch holder.  Turn work to inside and using the knitted cast-on method, CO 10 sts onto left needle. Turn work so RS is facing, remove 2nd Thumb Gusset m, move 1 st from right needle to left needle and then k2tog the first 2 sts on left needle.  K to end of round. (37 sts)

Left Mitten

Rnd 1: K11, pm, M1, pm, k to end. (1 st inc’d)

Rnd 2: P2, k9, sl m, k to 2nd m, sl m, k1, (p2, k2) 4 times.

Rnd 3: K11, sl m, M1, k to m, M1, sl m, k to end.

Rep Rnds 2-3 until there are 9 sts between m, ending after Rnd 2.

Reserve Thumb Sts

Next Rnd: Work in patt to first Thumb Gusset m, remove m, put next 9 sts onto scrap yarn or stitch holder.

Turn work to inside and using the knitted cast-on method, CO 10 sts onto left needle. Turn work so RS is facing, remove 2nd thumb gusset m, move 1 st from right needle to left needle and then k2tog the first 2 sts on left needle.  Work to end of rnd in pattern as established. (37 sts)

Continue in Garter Rib patt as established until Mitten meas 2” shorter than desired length,

ending after Rnd 2 of Garter Rib patt.

Top Shaping

Right Mitten

Set-up Rnd 1: (P2, k2) 2 times, k2tog, (k2, p2) 2 times, k19. (1 st dec’d)

Set-up Rnd 2: Knit all sts.

Rnd 1: P2, k2, p2, k1, s2kp, k1, p2, k2, p2, ssk, k15, k2tog. (32 sts)

Rnd 2 and all even number rnds: Knit all sts.

Rnd 3: P2, k2, p2, s2kp, p2, k2, p2, ssk, k13, k2tog. (28 sts)

Rnd 5: P2, k1, ssk, p1, k1, p1, k2tog, k1, p2, ssk, k11, k2tog. (24 sts)

Rnd 7: P2, k1, ssk, k1, k2tog, k1, p2, ssk, k9, k2tog. (20 sts)

Rnd 9: P2, k1, s2kp, k1, p2, ssk, k7, k2tog. (16 sts)

Mitten Thumbs

Place reserved 9 sts onto needles.

Attach MC and k across these sts, pick up and k9 sts along cast on edge. (18 sts)

Work in St st until Thumb reaches desired length.

Thumb Top Decreases

Rnd 1: (Ssk, k5, K2tog) twice. (14 sts)

Rnd 2: (Ssk, k3, k2tog) twice. (10 sts)

Rnd 3: (Ssk, k1, k2tog) twice. (6 sts)

Break MC, leaving an 8” / [20 cm] tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle and pull end through rem sts two times. Pull snug (not too tight) and then pull end to inside of work.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Wash and block gently.
