Starboard Stripe Tank

Welcome the warmer weather with this A-line tank, updated with striped side panels. Its timeless quality increases its versatility: paired with shorts for a day at the park or capris for a night out. With its simple pattern and construction, it’s an ideal portable project.

Yarn: Knit Picks Comfy Sport (75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic; 136 yards [124 meters]/50 grams): 24428 Planetarium (MC, 5 (5, 5, 6, 6, 5, 7) skeins), 24791 Whisker (CC, 1 skein)

Needles: US size 6 (4 mm) 29” circular; US size 5 (3.25 mm) 29” circular

Notions: Markers, scrap yarn or stitch holders, spare DPNS.

CC – contrast color

M – marker

M1L (make 1 left) – With left needle, lift strand between needles from front to back, knit lifted loop through the back to twist stitch (left leaning increase).

M1R (make 1 right) – With left needle, lift strand between needles from back to front, knit lifted loop through the front to twist stitch (right leaning increase).

MC – main color

Garter Stitch

Knit every row.

Pattern Notes

Top is worked from the bottom in two pieces and then seamed together.

MC is used for the body, while MC and CC are used alternately for the side panels. The armhole and neck garter edging are worked at the same time as the main piece for minimal finishing.

Shoulders are shaped with short rows and then seamed with 3-Needle BO.

Slip sts p-wise with yarn in front.

Body

Set-up Row (RS): K87 (91, 95, 101, 107, 115, 123), pm, knit to end.

Next Row (WS): Knit to end.

Switch to larger needle.

Row 1 (RS): Knit to m, sm, join CC and knit to end. (9 (11, 13, 13, 15, 19, 21) sts for side panel)

Row 2 (WS): With CC, knit to m, sm, switch to MC, purl to end.

Note: While working the Dec Row, rep Rows 1-4 for striping side patt and St st as established, alternating MC and CC every other row at the side panel.

Next Row (WS): Sl 1, k2, purl to m, sl m, knit to m, sl m, purl to last 3 sts, k3.

Dec Row (RS): Cont in patt to 2 sts before m, k2tog, sl m, knit to m, sl m, ssk, knit to end. (2 sts dec’d; 61 (65, 67, 71, 75, 79, 82) sts)

Shape same as for Back Neck. (59 (63, 65, 69, 73, 77, 80) sts)

Work 1 WS row.

Next Row (RS): Cont in patt for 14 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) sts, place these sts for Left Shoulder on holder, BO 31 (31, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38) sts, 14 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) sts rem for Right Shoulder. Remove markers.

Work Right Shoulder even until Armhole meas 6.25 (6.5, 6.75, 7, 7.5, 7.75, 8.25)” / [16 (16.5, 17, 18, 19, 19.5, 21) cm], ending with a WS row.

Right Shoulder

Shape shoulder using short rows as foll:

Short-Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, k12 (12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 15), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Rows 2 and all even rows (WS): Purl to last 3 sts, k3.

Short-Row 3: Sl 1, k7 (9, 8, 8, 8, 10, 11), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 5: Sl 1, k5 (6, 4, 4, 4, 6, 7), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 7: Work in patt, knitting wraps tog with wrapped sts.

Left Shoulder

Work even until Armhole meas 6.25 (6.5, 6.75, 7, 7.5, 7.75, 8.25)” / [16 (16.5, 17, 18, 19, 19.5, 21) cm], ending with a RS row.

Shape shoulder using short rows as foll:

Short-Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, k2, p9 (11, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Rows 2 and all even rows (RS): Knit to end.

Short-Row 3: Sl 1, k2, p6 (8, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) sts, wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 5: Sl 1, k2, p3 (5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) sts, wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 7: Work in patt, working wraps tog with wrapped sts.

Transfer shoulder sts to needle.

With RS tog, seam shoulders with 3-Needle BO.

Finishing

With MC, seam Front and Back together from the hem to Armhole.

Weave in ends and block to measurements.
