Derby Pullover

Rugged and cozy, this men’s sweater boasts a deep v-neckline and rustic wooden buttons. Edges are worked in a twisted rib that flows into a seeded rib pattern. Sleeves are indented, adding to the casual look.

Medium weight yarnYarn: Plymouth Galway Worsted (100% Wool; 210 yards [192 meters]/100 grams): #711 Pale Brown Heather (6 (7, 8, 8) skeins)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5mm) circular, 24” circular for neckband.

Notions: Stitch markers, holders, 5 buttons

1×1 Twisted Rib (worked on an odd number of sts)

Row 1 (WS): P1-tbl, *k1, p1-tbl; rep from * across row.

Row 2 (RS): K1-tbl, *p1, k1-tbl; rep from * across row.

Rep Rows 1-2 for patt.

Seeded Rib (multiple of 6 sts + 1)

Row 1 (RS): K1, *p1, k1; rep from * across row.

Row 2 (WS): *P2, [k1, p1] twice; rep from * across row, k last st.

Rep Rows 1-2 for patt.

Pattern Notes

This garment uses unit construction, which means each piece is finished as much as possible (bands, seams, etc.) before moving on to the next major piece. This eliminates much of the finishing work at the end – something many knitters dislike.

Pattern

Back

CO 91 (97, 103, 109) sts.

Work even in 1×1 Twisted Rib for 2.5”, ending with a WS row.

Changed to Seeded Rib patt and work even until Back meas 15 (16, 16, 18)” from CO edge.

Shape Underarm

BO 13 (15, 17, 18) sts at beg of next 2 rows. (65 (67, 69, 73) sts)

Work even until Back meas 8.5 (9, 9.5, 9.5)” above BO underarm sts, ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders and Back Neck

Mark center 23 (25, 27, 29) sts.

Next Row (RS): Knit to first marker, join second ball of yarn and BO marked sts, work to end of row.

Working on both sides of neck with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge every row 3 times, AT THE SAME TIME BO at each arm edge 6 sts twice, then BO last 6 (6, 6, 7) sts.

Fasten off last st.

Front

Work as for Back until Front meas 14 (15, 15, 16)” above CO edge, ending with a WS row.

Begin Neck Opening

Mark center 7 sts.

Next Row (RS): Knit to first marker, join second ball of yarn and BO marked sts, work to end of row. (42 (45, 48, 51) sts at each side of neck)

Working on both sides of Neck with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each Neck edge every 6th row 6 times, AT THE SAME TIME work side edges even until Front meas same as for Back to underarm.

Shape Underarm

BO 13 (15, 17, 18) sts at armhole edge. (23 (24, 25, 27) sts)

Continuing with established Neck decs, work arm edges even until armhole meas 6.5 (7, 7, 8.5)” above BO underarm sts. Insert 23 (24, 25, 26) sts after all neck and underarm shaping is complete. Tian: note change in last number.

Shape Neck

BO 3 sts at each Neck edge.

Dec 1 st at each Neck edge every row 2 (3, 4, 5) times. (18 (18, 18, 19) sts left on each side after all shaping)

Work Neck edge even until armhole meas same as for Back.

Shape shoulders

BO at each arm edge 6 sts twice, then BO last 6 (6, 6, 7) sts.

Fasten off last st.

Button Band

With RS facing, beg at lower edge of Right Front opening, pick up and knit 3 sts for every 4 rows along edge.

Adjust sts to have an odd number of sts.

Work even in 1×1 Twisted Rib for 7 rows.

BO in patt on WS.

Buttonhole Band

Beg at top edge of Left Neck opening, pick up and knit the same number of sts as for Button Band.

Work even in 1×1 Twisted Rib for 3 rows.

Buttonhole Row (RS): Mark sts for 4 buttonholes evenly spaced. Marked sts should be a purl st. Last buttonhole will be in neck band. [Work to 1 st before marked st, yo, k2tog] 4 times, work to end of row.

Work even in 1×1 Twisted Rib for 3 rows.

BO in patt on RS.

Neck Band

Sew shoulder seams.

With RS facing and using circular needle, pick up and knit 1 st in each st, and 3 sts for every 4 rows around entire neckline.

Adjust sts to have an odd number of sts.

Work even in 1×1 Twisted Rib for 7 rows, making final buttonhole on Row 4.

BO in patt on RS.

Lap

Place Button Band over Buttonhold Band and sew bottoms edges tog.

Sew overlapped bands to BO sts of opening.

Sew buttons to Button Band.

Body is now completely finished.

Sleeves

CO 55 (55, 57, 61) sts.

Work even in 1×1 Twisted Rib until Cuff meas 3”, ending with a WS row.

Working in Seeded Rib patt, inc 1 st each end every 10 (8, 8, 6) rows 7 (10, 10, 12) times. (69 (75, 77, 85) sts)

Work even until Sleeve meas 19 (19, 20, 20)” from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

Mark each end st for underarm.

Work even for 3 (3.5, 4, 4.5)” more.

BO all sts.

Assembly

Sew Sleeves into armholes, matching marked underarm sts to first BO underarm sts.

Sew Sleeve and side seams.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Steam lightly.
