One Skein Chunky Beret

Chunky yarn and simple lace combine for a fast, fun knit. This seamless beret features chevron lace and a star-shaped crown for the only hat you’ll need this winter.

Size: One size to fit average adult head, approx. 22-24” [56-61 cm]

Gauge: 14 sts and 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Yarn:

Bulky Weight Yarn Malabrigo Chunky (100% merino wool; 100 yards [95 meters]/100 grams): #98 Tuareg (1 ball)
Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular needles and US size 10 (6.0 mm) 16” circular and set of DPNS
Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up. To work from the charted instructions, work the brim as per the written instructions. The chart is worked through once, working the 12-st repeat 7 times around. Chart is read right to left.

Pattern

Brim

With smaller needles, CO 84 sts.
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 until Brim measures 2” (5 cm).

Body

Change to larger needles.
Rnd 1: [K4, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3] 7 times.
Rnds 2, 4, 6, 10: Knit.
Rnd 3: [K3, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk, k2] 7 times.
Rnd 5: [K2, (k2tog, yo) twice, k1, (yo, ssk) twice, k1] 7 times.
Rnd 7: [K1, (k2tog, yo) twice, k3, (yo, ssk) twice] 7 times.
Rnd 8: K to last st, slip last st of round purlwise, remove marker, slip st back to LH needle, replace marker.
Rnd 9: [Sk2p, yo, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, ssk, yo] 7 times.

Finishing

Cut yarn and thread through remaining st and fasten off. Weave in ends. Soak hat in warm water and then remove excess water by pressing in a towel. To accentuate the beret shape of this hat, block over a small bowl or plate. Take care not to overstretch the brim (use waste yarn to cinch in the rib). Leave to air dry. yarn ball
