Cate Cable Hat + Swatch

Cate features a decorative knotted tie which also gives the benefit of providing an adjustable and perfect fit. The knitting begins with the tie, worked flat in reverse stockinette stitch so it naturally curls inward. The ends are tapered for a graceful look.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size:  Small, Medium, Large (Piece is quite stretchy due to the garter stitch.)

Measurements: approximately 20 (21.5, 23)” / (50 (54, 58) cm) around.

Gauge: 20 sts per 4” (10cm) in garter st, after blocking.

Materials

Yarn:  Three Irish Girls Springvale DK / 8 ply, 100% Superwash Merino, 270 yds (247 m), 4oz. Colorway shown: Magnolia.

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) DPNs, 2 circulars, or magic loop,

Notions: Markers, cable needle (CN), tapestry needle.

Special Stitches

C16B: Cable 16 back; slip 8 stitches to cable needle and hold in back of work, knit next 8 sts, knit 8 sts from cable needle.

C16F: Cable 16 front; slip 8 stitches to cable needle and hold in front of work, knit next 8 sts, knit 8 sts from cable needle.

KLL (knit left loop): Insert left needle into left loop of stitch two rows below last completed stitch. Knit this stitch through the back loop (also called Left Lifted Increase).

KRL (knit right loop): Insert right needle into right loop of stitch just below next stitch; place it onto left needle and knit it; then knit the stitch on needle (also called Right Lifted Increase).

Cable Pattern

Rnd 1: K7, p2, k7.

Rnd 2: K2, p4, k1, p2, k1, p4, k2.

Rnds 3-6: Rep Rnds 1-2 twice.

Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnd 8: K2, p4, k4, p4, k2

Rnd 9: C16B

Rnd 10: K2, p4, k4, p4, k2.

Rnds 11-16: Rep Rnds 1-2, 3 times.

Rep these 16 rounds for cable pattern.

Swatch Pattern

Cast on 30 sts.

Knit 3 rows.

Row 1 (RS): K6, p1, k7, p2, k7, p1, k6.

Row 2: (WS): K2, p4, k1, p2, k4, p1, k2, p1, k4, p2, k1, p4, k2.

Rows 3-6: Rep Rows 1-2 twice.

Row 7: Rep Row 1.

Row 8: K2, p4, k1, p2, k4, p4, k4, p2, k1, p4, k2.

Row 9: K6, p1, C16B, p1, k6.

Row 10: Repeat Row 8.

Rows 11-16: Rep Rows 1-2, 3 times.

Rows 17-32: Rep these 16 rows.

Rows 33-36: Knit.

Body of Hat

Join sts to work in the round, using your preferred method of working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. PM to mark beginning of round 4 sts to the right of where the 10 cast-on sts begin.

Setup Rounds:

Rnd 1: (p1, k1) 9 times, k to end of Rnd.

Rnd 2-3: as Rnd 1.

Begin Cable Pattern:

Rnd 4: P1, work Cable Pattern, beginning with Rnd 1, p1, PM, k to end of Rnd.

Rnd 5: P1, work Cable Pattern, p1, sm, p to end of Rnd.

Rnd 6: P1, work Cable Pattern, p1, sm, k to end of Rnd.

Rnds 7-44: Rep Rnds 5-6, following Cable Pattern as established.

Size M Only:

Rnds 45-52: Rep Rnds 5-6, following Cable Pattern as established.

Size L Only:

Rnds 45-58: Rep Rnds 5-6, following Cable Pattern as established.

Note: For Slouchy Version, work an additional 1-2” (2-5cm) in patt, ending with even-numbered round.

Cut yarn, leaving 7-10” (18-25cm). Using yarn needle, draw yarn end through rem sts. Pull tight and sew in on WS.

Finishing

Weave in all loose yarn ends.

Block to measurements.

Tie 2 ends of Tie Edging into a knot, adjusting for proper size. If desired, sew the ties into an attractive position so they stay where you have arranged them.
