Bottoms Up Women’s Hat

A traditional hat pattern with a fun twist! If you’re a fan of the classics, you’ll love this pattern that features a basic hat design embellished with colored i-cord. Play with the colors to make this charming hat for all your family and friends.

Size: One size fits most 

Gauge: 20 sts and 21 rows = 4” [10 cm] in reverse st st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Ella Rae Classic Superwash (100% wool; 219 yards [200 meters]/100 grams): Light Gray (MC, 1 ball), Magenta (CC, 1 ball)
Needles: US size 8 (5.0 mm) circular and double pointed (16”) needles
Notions: Removable stitch markers, cable needle and tapestry needle

Special Stitches

3-st RPC: Sl 1 st to cn and hold to back, k2, p1 from cn.
3-st LPC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to front, p1, k2 from cn.
4-st RPC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to back, k2, p2 from cn.
4-st LPC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to front, p2, k2 from cn.
4-st RC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to back, k2, k2 from cn.
4-st LC: Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to front, k2, k2 from cn.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked from the bottom up with contrast colored cables knit at the same time as a main color background.

Pattern

CO 80 stitches and join without twisting.

Ribbing

Using MC [k2,p2] five times, pm, switch to CC, k2, switch to MC p2, k2, p2, switch to CC k2, pm, switch to MC, p2, [k2,p2] until end.
Repeat above row slipping markers when necessary for 8 rows.

Body

All rows: Purl to m, sm, complete pattern section, sm, purl to end.
All knit stitches are using contrast color and all purl stitches are using the main color. 

Pattern Section

Row 1 (RS): K2, p6, k4, p6, k2.
Row 2 and all even rows: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Row 3: 3-st LPC, p4, 3-st RPC.
Row 5: P1, 4-st LPC, 4-st RPC, p1.
Row 7: P3, 4-st RC, p3.
Row 9: P1, 4-st RPC, 4-st LPC, p1.
Row 11: 3-st RPC, p4, 3-st LPC.
Row 12: K2, p6, k4, p6, k2.
Repeat rows 1-12 twice.
Work rows 1-7.

Decreases

All decreases are done on the even rows
Row 8: [P8, p2tog] twice, sm, work in pattern, sm, [p8, p2tog] to end. (74 sts)
Row 9: P to m, sm, P1, 4-st RPC, 4-st LPC, p1, sm, p to end.
Row 10: [P7, p2tog] twice, sm, work in pattern, sm, [p7, p2tog] to end. (68 sts)
Row 11: P to m, sm, 3-st RPC, p4, 3-st LPC, sm, p to end.
Row 12: [P6, p2tog] twice, sm, work in pattern, sm, [p6, p2tog] to end. (62 sts)

Finishing

Cut yarn.
Run yarn through live sts and pull tight.
Weave in ends. yarn ball
