Puff Sleeve Heirloom Lace Baby Set

Step into a world of vintage charm with this baby set, highlighting a textured lace yoke and puff sleeves on the top. The back features a button closure, ensuring a snug fit around the neckline. Materials

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Cascade Heritage Silk, 85% Superwash Merino Wool / 15% Silk, 437 yds / 100 g, in color 5766 Stormy Weather, 1 (1, 1, 2, 2, 2) skeins.

Needles: US 1.5 (2.50 mm) and US 2.5 (3.00 mm) needles.

Notions: Tapestry needle; scissors; measuring tape; stitch markers (m); small button.

Pattern Notes

Top is knitted bottom-up, in the round, to armholes. After separating for Front and Back, the yoke is knitted flat, shaping armholes, neck, and Back Neck opening. After seaming shoulder seams, sleeve stitches picked up around armholes and puff sleeves knitted seamlessly in Garter Lace. Bottoms are knitted top-down, in the round, to leg opening. After separating for legs, each leg is worked seamlessly.

Pattern

Top

With smaller size needles, CO 104 (112, 120, 128, 136, 144) sts, place BOR m, and join to work in the Rnd.

Work a 1×1 rib patt as follows:

Rnd 1: *K 1, p 1; Rep from * around.

Rep Rnd 1 another 11 (13, 15, 17, 19, 20) times.

Change to larger size needles.

Body

Begin working in St st, knitting every Rnd.

When body measures 5 (5.5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5)” from CO edge, divide for Front and Back as follows:

Knit across first 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34) sts for half Back sts, BO 4 sts for Left Armhole, knit across next 48 (52, 56, 60, 64, 68) Front sts, BO 4 sts for Right Armhole, knit to end of the Rnd. (96 (104, 112, 120, 128, 136) Body sts.)

Back

Continue working Back piece flat, shaping armholes as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K to 3 sts before BO sts, k2tog, k 1. 1 st Dec.

Row 2 (WS): P to 3 sts before BO sts, ssp, p 1. 1 st Dec.

Rep Rows 1 & 2 once more. (44 (48, 52, 56, 60, 64) Back sts.)

Work even in St st for 2 (2, 4, 4, 6, 6) rows.

Begin working in Garter Lace pattern as follows:

Rows 1-3: Knit.

Row 4 (WS): P 1, *yo, p2tog; rep from * across to last st, p 1.

Rows 5-7: Knit.

Back Neck Split

Split for Back Neck as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K 22 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32) sts, turn.

Right Back

Continue to work in Garter Lace, working on Right Back piece, until piece measures 3.25 (3.25, 3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.25)” from underarm, ending with WS row.

Right Shoulder Shaping

BO 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 10) sts at beg of next 2 RS rows. BO all sts.

Left Back

With RS facing, join yarn at Back Neck split.

Work in Garter Lace until piece measures 3.25 (3.25, 3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.25)” from underarm, ending with RS row.

Left Shoulder Shaping

BO 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 10) sts at beg on next 2 WS rows. BO all sts.

Front

With RS facing, join yarn after BO sts.

Begin working on Front piece flat, shaping armholes as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K to 3 sts before BO sts, k2tog, k 1. 1 st Dec.

Row 2 (WS): P to 3 sts before BO sts, ssp, p 1. 1 st Dec.

Right Shoulder Shaping

Left Front

With WS facing, join yarn after Front Neck.

Work on Left Front piece flat, shaping Neck opening as follows:

Next Row (WS): K 1, ssk, work in Patt across. 1 st Dec.

Next Row (RS): Work in Patt across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1. 1 st Dec.

Work in Garter Lace until piece measures 3.25 (3.25, 3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.25)” from underarm, ending with WS row.

Left Shoulder Shaping

BO 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8) sts at beg on next row.

Knit 1 row.

BO all sts.

Joining Shoulder Seams

With RS facing, join both shoulder seams using preferred method.

Sleeves

With RS facing, join yarn at underarm. With larger size needles, PU 68 (72, 76, 80, 84, 88) sts around armhole, place BOR and join to work in the Rnd in Garter Lace patt as follows:

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnd 2: Purl.

Rnd 3: Knit.

Rnd 4: *Yo, k2tog; rep from * around.

Rnd 5: Knit.

Rnd 6: Purl.

Rnd 7: Knit.

Rnd 8: *K2tog, yo; rep from * around.

Rep Rnds 1-8 for patt, until sleeve measures 2.5 (2.75, 3, 3.25, 3.5, 4)”

Cuff

Dec Rnd: *K2tog; rep from * around. (34 (36, 38, 40, 42, 44) sts)

Change to smaller size needles.

Work cuff in 1×1 rib for 8 (10, 10, 12, 12, 14) rnds. BO all sts loosely.

Repeat for second sleeve.

Neck Ribbing

With RS facing, join yarn at top Left edge of Back Neck split.

With smaller size needles, PU 12 (14, 15, 16, 18, 19) sts along Left Back Neck edge, 12 (12, 14, 15, 16, 17) sts down Left Front Neck edge, 18 (18, 20, 22, 22, 24) sts across Front Neck edge, 12 (12, 14, 15, 16, 17) sts up Right Front Neck edge, 12 (14, 15, 16, 18, 19) sts along Right Back Neck edge. (66 (70, 78, 84, 90, 96) Neck sts.)

Work 1×1 ribbing for 8 (10, 10, 12, 12, 14) rows. BO all sts loosely. Do not break yarn.

Back Neck Split Edging

With smaller size needles, using attached yarn, PU 26 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34) sts around Back Neck Split.

Buttonhole Row: K to last 3 sts, yo, k2tog, k 1.

Knit 1 row.

BO all sts.

Finishing

Weave in all the ends. Sew small button at the top of the Back Neck edging, opposite the buttonhole.

Bottoms

With smaller size needles, CO 104 (112, 120, 128, 136, 144) sts, place BOR m, and join to work in the Rnd.

Work a 1×1 rib patt as follows:

Rnd 1: *K 1, p 1; Rep from * around.

Rep Rnd 1 another 13 (15, 17, 19, 21, 22) times.

Change to larger size needles.

Inc Rnd: *K 13 (14, 15, 16, 17, 18), M1; rep from * around. (112 (120, 128, 136, 144, 152) sts.)

Work even in St st for 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) rnds.

Next Rnd (Setup Rnd): K 56 (60, 64, 68, 72, 76), pm, k to end.

Next Rnd (Inc Rnd): *K 3, M1L, k to 3 sts before m, M1R, k 3; Rep from * once more. (4 sts inc.)

Rep Inc Rnd every 4th Rnd another 3 times. (128 (136, 144, 152, 160, 168) sts.)

Knit 5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15) rnds.

Divide for Legs and Crotch

Next Rnd: K 58 (62, 66, 70, 74, 78) sts, BO next 12 sts, knit 52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) sts, BO next 12 sts. (52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) sts for each leg.)

Left Leg

Change to smaller size needles.

Join left Leg sts to work in the Rnd, and place BOR m.

Work in 1×1 Rib for 8 (10, 10, 12, 12, 14) Rnds. BO all sts loosely.

Right Leg

Leaving a long tail for sewing up, join yarn at the beginning of Right Leg sts.

Change to smaller size needles and join to work in the round.

Work in 1×1 Rib for 8 (10, 10, 12, 12, 14) Rnds. BO all sts loosely.

Finishing

Using the long tail end, graft the Front and Back crotch sts. Weave in all the ends.
