Block Party Afghan

This beautiful afghan is worked in different colored blocks in the garter stitch. The joining of the blocks creates the eye-pleasing effect of this lovely design. Since each block is worked separately, it is a perfect project for on the go.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Finished measurement 54″ [137 cm] each side; Each square: 6″ [15 cm]

Gauge: 28 sts and 14 ridges = 4″ [10 cm] in Garter stitch after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn:

medium weight yarn Caron Simply Soft (100% Acrylic, 315 yards [288 meters]/170 grams): #H970039702 Off White (MC), 5 balls; #H97003 Sage (CC1), 2 balls; #H9700B Watermelon (CC2), 2 balls; #H97003 Lemonade (CC3), 2 balls

Needles: US size 8 (5 mm): straight

Notions: US size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook; tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Kfb: knit in front and back of the stitch

S2k2p: Slip 2 sts as if to knit, k1, pass the 2 sts over the knitted one

Pattern Notes

Each square is worked from one point increased to the needed width and then decrease to get to the other point.

Block

CO 3 sts.

Row 1 and every odd row (RS): Knit.

Row 2: K1, k in front and back and front of the next st, k1 – 5 sts.

Row 4: K1, kfb, k1, kfb, k1 – 7 sts.

Row 6: K1, kfb, k3, kfb, k1 – 9 sts.

Row 8: K1, kfb, knit until there are 2 sts left on needle, kfb, k1 – 11 sts.

Rows 9-38: Repeat Rows 7-8 – 41 sts at the end of Row 38.

Break yarn if you are working on a 2 color block. Otherwise, continue with the same yarn.

Row 39 and every odd row (RS): Knit.

Row 40 (Dec Row): K1, ssk, k until there are 3 sts left on needle, k2tog, k1 – 37 sts.

Rows 41-62: Repeat Rows 39-40 until there are 5 sts on the needle on Row 62.

Row 63: Knit.

Row 64: K1, s2k2p, k1.

Row 65: Knit.

Using the Block instruction above:

With MC, make 9 blocks

With CC1, make 3 blocks

With CC2, make 3 blocks

With CC3, make 3 blocks

With MC and CC1, make 21 blocks

With MC and CC2, make 21 blocks

With MC and CC3, make 21 blocks

Finishing

Using the diagram below and tapestry needle, join the blocks.

With crochet hook, work one round of sc around the afghan by crocheting in every other stitch and 3 sc in the corner stitch. Work one round of reverse sc (Crab stitch) in every sc.

Fasten off. Block afghan to size.yarn ball
