Special Stitches
Cable Cast on
- Make a slip knot and place on the left-hand needle.
- Knit into the slip knot and place the loop kwise onto the left-hand needle.
- Knit between the previous two sts, and place the loop kwise onto the left-hand needle.
- Repeat step 3 until CO is completed.
Pattern Notes
The headband is worked in the round, using a circular needle, or magic loop. The last I-cord loop acts like a master link to connect the first and next-to-last loops into a continuous chain. This is the only complicated part.
Pattern
CO 84 (91, 98, 105) sts using cable cast on. K1 row, then join making sure not to twist the work.
(P1 rnd, K1rnd) twice.
K 5 rnds.
(K7, ML) 12 (13, 14, 15) times. Place the 4 sts of the last loop on waste yarn, cut a 6” tail.
Master Link
Name the first loop made A and the last complete loop Z. Your last loop is currently an I-cord stub and yarn tail.
Setup: Beginning with the first loop made (A), twist the loop ½ turn counter clockwise, give it a yank to pull the stitches tight, then pull the next loop through, connecting the loops, continue twisting and pulling to loop Z. Check that all the loops are twisted the same direction. Figure 1 shows an incorrectly twisted loop. Figure 2 shows setup for threading the master link.
Step 1: Thread the I-cord, and yarn tail through loop Z back to front. Refer to Figure 3
Step 2: Thread the I-cord loop around the base of loop A top to bottom. Refer to Figure 4
Step 3: Then back through Z front to back, and orient it so that this piece is to the left of its base. Refer to figure 5.
Step 4: Replace the 4 sts held on waste yarn onto the right-hand needle. CHECK YOUR WORK again, as this is the last time to correct any improperly twisted loops.
K 6 rnds.
(P1rnd, K1rnd) twice, BO Pwise.
Work in ends and block.
