Lapis Pullover

Sometimes, especially in cold gloomy winter, nothing is better than getting home from work and pulling on a cozy sweater, especially if that sweater has thumbholes and a kangaroo pocket. This warm sweater is destined to become your new favorite.

Size: Finished Bust Size 33 (36.75, 39, 42, 46, 50.25)” to fit bust 29-31 (32-35, 35-37, 38-40, 42-44, 46-48)”

2-4” positive ease recommended.

Gauge: 15 sts and 22 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Knit Picks Wonderfluff (70% Baby Alpaca, 7% Merino Wool, 23% Nylon; 142 yards [130 meters]/50 grams): 27193 Atlantic Heather (MC, 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 11) balls)

Needles: US size 10.5 (6.5 mm) 16” and 29” circulars and DPNs

Notions: Markers, stitch holder, tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

This pullover is worked from the bottom up, then sleeves and body are joined on one needle to work the yoke.

The sleeve cuffs have thumbholes, but if you don’t care for thumbholes then just work the cuffs in straight garter stitch.

Pattern

Using circular needles, CO 116 (130, 138, 150, 164, 188) sts. Join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist. PM for BOR.

Rnd 1: Purl.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rep last 2 rows 5 more times (6 garter ridges), including the ridge created with the CO rnd.

Next Rnd: K, increasing 8 sts evenly. (124 (138, 146, 158, 172, 188) sts)

Knit 2 rnds.

Next Rnd: K14 (16, 17, 19, 21, 24), kf&b into next 34 (37, 39, 41, 44, 46) sts, k to end.

Next Rnd: K14 (16, 17, 19, 21, 24), separate the kf&b sts as follows: using either a separate needle or a stitch holder, place the knitted stitch onto the spare needle and knit the purled stitch onto the working needle. The knitted stitch will not be worked. Once all 34 (37, 39, 41, 44, 46) kf&b sts are separated, either leave the knitted stitch portion on the spare needle or stitch holder, or transfer to waste yarn. Continue knitting around to end.

Work even in St st until piece meas 17” or to desired length to underarm.

Next Rnd: K to 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7) sts before BOR, BO 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7) sts, remove m, BO 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7) sts, k62 (69, 73, 79, 86, 94), BO 8 (10, 10, 12, 12, 14) sts, k to end. Put aside and make sleeves.

Sleeves (make 2)

CO 26 (26, 28, 28, 28, 28) sts onto one DPN. Divide over 3 or 4 DPNs according to preference and join to work in the rnd. Beginning with a knit rnd, work 5 rnds in Garter stitch.

Working back and forth, knit 10 rows. This will form the thumbhole.

Rejoin to work in the rnd. Beginning with a purl rnd, work 5 rnds in Garter stitch.

Switch to St st and knit 6 rnds.

Inc Rnd: K1, M1R, k to 1 st before end, M1L, k1. (2 sts inc’d)

Rep Inc Rnd every 9 (8, 8, 7, 6, 5) rnds 8 (10, 10, 11, 13, 15) more times. (44 (48, 50, 52, 56, 60) sts)

Work even in St st until Sleeve meas 19” or to desired length to underarm.
Next Rnd: K to 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7) sts before end, BO 8 (10, 10, 12, 12, 14) sts. (36 (38, 40, 40, 44, 46) sts)

Break yarn.

Rep for second sleeve.

Join Body and Sleeves

Knit across Front sts of Body. Slip held sts of one Sleeve onto left needle, then knit across. Knit across Back sts. Slip held sts of other Sleeve onto left needle and knit across. PM for new BOR (the Right Back Shoulder). (180 (194, 206, 214, 236, 260) sts)

Work even in St st for 4 (4.5, 4.75, 5.25, 5.75, 6.25)”.

Dec Rnd: *K1, k2tog; rep from * to last 0 (2, 2, 1, 2, 0) sts, k to end. 120 (132, 140, 144, 160, 168) sts.

Work even in St st for 1.75 (2.25, 2.25, 2.75, 3.25, 3.75)”.

Dec Rnd: *K1, k2tog; rep from * to last 0 (0, 2, 1, 1, 2) sts, k to end. 80 (88, 96, 97, 108, 114) sts.

Switch to shorter circular needle when necessary.

Knit 1 rnd.

Short Row Set 1: K 40 (44, 48, 49, 54, 57), W&T. Note that this point aligns with the Left Front Shoulder. P to BOR, sm, p15 (16, 17, 17, 19, 20), W&T.

Short Row Set 2: K to BOR, sm, k 39 (42, 44, 47, 52, 57) W&T. P to BOR, sm, p13 (14, 15, 15, 17, 18), W&T.

Short Row Set 3: K to BOR, sm, k 37 (40, 42, 45, 50, 57), W&T. P to BOR, sm, p11 (12, 13, 13, 15, 16), W&T.

K to BOR.

Next Rnd: K, picking up wraps as needed.

Next Rnd: Purl.

Next Rnd: Knit.

Next Rnd: Purl.

BO kwise.

Pocket

If you placed the held pocket sts onto waste yarn, carefully return them to a needle. Join yarn to work a RS row. Pocket is worked back and forth.

Work in Garter Stitch (knit ever row) for 18 rows. (9 garter stitch ridges)

Next Row (RS): Ssk, k to 2 sts from end, k2tog. (2 sts dec’d)

Next Row (WS): Knit.

Rep last 2 rows 10 more times. (22 total sts dec’d. 12 (15, 17, 19, 22, 24) sts rem)

BO all sts.

Break yarn, leaving a tail about a yard long. Do not weave this tail in during finishing; it is used to sew pocket to sweater.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Wash and block.

Seam underarms.

Lay sweater down flat with front facing up. Lay Pocket against sweater body, stretching pocket up slightly. Cut a piece of yarn about a yard long and use it to sew the straight sides of the pocket to the sweater body, ensuring pocket is straight. Use tail from Pocket BO to sew top of pocket to sweater body, again ensuring that pocket is straight.

Weave in ends.
