Leilani Shawl

This light shawlette is perfect for spring layering. Its crescent shape and large garter stitch portion is very easy to knit and the feminine lace pattern works up quite intuitively. Using just one skein of fingering weight yarn, this is the perfect opportunity to treat yourself or a loved one with some luxury yarn.

Gauge: 21 sts and 52 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Garter st after wet blocking

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Frida Fuchs Hosenmatz 4ply (100% Merino Superwash; 437 yards [400 meters]/100 grams): Wacholderbeere (1 skein)

Needles: US size 2½ (3.0 mm) 60” circular

Special Stitches

Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Sewn Bind-Off

Break a length of yarn that is 3 times longer than the length of the bind-off edge and thread through a tapestry needle.

Step 1: Insert tapestry needle through the first 2 sts on LH needle as if to purl 2 together and pull tapestry needle with thread through.

Step 2: Insert tapestry needle back through first st as if to knit and pull thread through. Slip this sts off LH needle.

Rep Steps 1-2 until all sts are bound off.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked flat from the top down starting with a garter-tab cast-on. The lace section is fully charted.

Pattern

CO 5 sts.

Knit 11 rows. After last row rotate work 90 degrees clockwise. Pick up and knit 5 sts from the garter ridges. Pick up and knit 5 sts from cast-on edge. (15 sts)

Row 1 (WS): K2, yo, knit to 2 sts before end, yo, k2. (2 sts inc’d)

Row 2 (RS): K2, yo, k1tbl, knit to 3 sts before end, k1tbl, yo, k2. (2 sts inc’d)

Rep Rows 1-2 until there are 257 sts on needles, ending with a WS row.

Begin lace edge.

Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, work from chart, yo, k2. (2 sts inc)

Row 2 (WS): K2, yo, k1tbl, work from chart, k1tbl, yo, k2. (2 sts inc)

Cont working Rows 1-2 until all 26 rows from chart are worked once.

Knit 8 rows.

BO all sts using Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Sewn Bind-Off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Wet block aggressively into crescent shape.
