Pattern Notes

Two rectangles sewn together create this poncho.

The pattern is completely reversible.

Start with 2×2 Ribbing edge. Work the Melange Pattern, using the chart or written instructions. End with 2×2 Ribbing edge. If you prefer a longer rectangle, each Melange Pattern repeat is 72 rows and 13” / [33 cm] long. You can add a whole patt rep or you can add extra rows within the patt rep for shorter length of the rectangle. Each section within the Melange Pattern is 18 rows long, add rows symmetrically in increament of 2 or 4 rows.

  • If I join this froup are the patterns free? I have joined the Gold group. I just presumed any of these patterns are free…thanks! The poncho is gorgeous. I need the yarn, but don’t know what size I should make. I’m 4’10” and was planning on making the Medium, but what lengths are the rectangles? Thank you!

    Hello Barbara,
As per pattern after you make the Melange pattern Row 1 – 72 twice, then make Melange pattern Row 1-18, and after completing that you work the second rib edge 1-20 rows.
    Have fun knitting.

After completing rows 1 thru 72 twice, do I repeat rows 1 thru 18 of Melange pattern and then ribbing or after row 72 knit ribbing for 18 rows.

  • I subscribed to this website and I love a number of the patterns BUT why can’t I print a copy of the pattern so I can work on it or download a copy without all the other junk on the page? UGH this really frustrates me.

    Hi
I want to make the poncho for my granddaughter. How do I determine if I should make a small or a medium. How many inches is the medium, from shoulder to shoulder? I know I have to measure the length, but i really don’t want it falling off her shoulder.
    Thank you

    • Hello,
You have not provided enough information for me to tell you what size you should knit for your granddaughter. It depends on her cloth size and her body type.
The schematic should provide enough information as what the finished size Poncho will look like.
The neck opening for each size is determined by deducting the short side from the long side of the rectangle and multiply that by 2.
The unattached part of the rectangle for each size is: 8 (9, 10, 12)” per each rectangle, multiplied by 2 and the length of the inner side of the opening is: 16 ( 18, 20, 24)”
The Poncho’s width from shoulder to shoulder will adapt to each individual person and will vary.
Basically if your granddaughter is small and petite size I would suggest make the small size, if your granddaughter is medium size make the medium size.
If you are still unsure, make a mock up from paper for the two sizes and try it on her. This will definitively give you an answer as to what size would be better to knit.

Why can’t I copy or print the chart? When I try to copy it only copies from line 35 to 72. I don’t seem to be able to copy the first part of the chart from line 1 to 34

Hi Kathy! Sorry to hear that you are having trouble. I would try printing the chart and looking at the print preview to make sure the whole chart is there. If there’s a setting to “fit to page” that will ensure the whole chart will be printed. Hope this helps! – Nicola, Editor

Hi, I have knitted this project. I have my pieces all blocked and am trying to figure out how it should be sewn together. I have been using the chart, but it doesn’t seem to fit together right. No matter what I try it’s not working. I am using craft clips to hold edges together before I actually sew. Can you please give some better instruction?

Hi Jo! The size is from small through XL but you will also need to consider the body length of the poncho, it is also from the small to XL, but there is a variety of body sizes and for some the small size might not be a fit, if they are extra long and lean and wise versa if someone is XL size but short body length. The knitted sample is the medium size of 22″ and the body length is 31″. I strongly suggest that before deciding on what size to knit see on their body where each body length will end and make the decision based on that. I know it’s an extra step but it allows to truly make it to fit exactly as the knitter would like to. Hope that helps! – Nicola, Editor
