Kiona Mittens

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 10” length x 7.5” hand circumference, blocked.

Gauge: 36 sts and 40 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Stranded pattern stitch after wet blocking

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Cascade Yarns Heritage (75% Superwash Merino Wool, 25 % Nylon; 437 yards [400 meters]/100 grams): #5686 China Blue (MC 1 skein); Diamond Luxury Cashfina (100% Cashmere; 177 yards [162 meters]/25 grams): #1 (CC, 1 ball)

Needles: US size 2 (2.75 mm) two 16” circular

Notions: Markers, cable needle, waste yarn for reserving thumb stitches, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

C4F: Slip 2 sts to cn and hold to front of work; knit next 2 sts, then knit 2 sts from cable needle.

Special Stitches

Twisted Garter Edging (worked flat)

With MC, CO required number of sts.

Row 1: Knit with MC.

Rows 2-3: Attach CC and knit with CC.

Rows 4-5: With MC, knit.

Rows 6-7: Knit with CC.

Row 8: Knit with MC.

Row 9 (WS): With MC, k3, *bring left needle to front, then under work and up the back, and again to the front, twisting the edging, k6; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Pattern Notes

Carry yarn not in use loosely along the inside of the work. Avoid twisting yarns when changing colors.

Pattern (make 2)

With MC, CO 66 sts, do not join.

Work Twisted Garter Edging Rows 1-9. PM and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

Begin Rnd I of Arctic Sea Mitten chart and work through Rnd 21.

Rnd 22: Work 33 sts in patt, pm for start of thumb gusset, begin Rnd 1 of Arctic Sea Mitten Thumb chart, pm for end of Thumb Gusset, work to end of Rnd 22 of Arctic Sea Mitten chart.

Cont in patt as set, working Thumb Gusset sts in between gusset markers and mitten hand patt as set.

Reserve Thumb Gusset sts

On Rnd 22 of Arctic Sea Mitten Thumb chart, reserve thumb gusset sts as follows: work to first thumb gusset m, remove m, place next 26 gusset sts onto scrap yarn, turn work so inside is facing and using Cable Cast-On Method and CC, CO 5 sts, turn work so outside is facing, remove second thumb gusset m, move one CO st from right needle to left needle and k2tog, the last CO st with the first st on left needle, complete Mitten in patt as set.

Cont Arctic Sea Mitten chart through Rnd 75. (10 sts)

Break MC and CC, leaving 8” tails. Thread MC onto tapestry needle and run through rem sts twice, pull snug.

Run both MC and CC ends to inside of work.

Weave in all ends.

Mitten Thumb

Place reserved thumb gusset sts onto needles.

Attach MC and CC, begin Rnd 22 of Arctic Sea Mitten Thumb chart and work as follows: work 26 sts in patt, with CC pick up 4 sts along CO edge, pm for end of rnd.

Cont in patt as set through Rnd 44. (10 sts)

Break MC and CC, leaving 8” tails. Thread MC onto tapestry needle and run through rem sts twice, pull snug.

Run both MC and CC ends to inside of work.

Weave in all ends.

Finishing

Wash and wet block to size.
