Campfire Coals Cowl

Outshine the campfire this year by working up this toasty plaid cowl. The pattern uses stripes and slipped stitches to create an easy, yet stunning result.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 30 (45)” circumference x 7” wide

Gauge: 14 sts and 18 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn: Nako Sport Wool (75% Acrylic, 25% Wool; 131 yards [119 meters]/100 grams): #2167 Beige (MC), 1 (2) balls; #4409 Brick Red (CC), 1 (2) balls

Needles: US size 9 (5.5 mm): 24” circular

Notions: Tapestry needles; spare needle; waste yarn for Provisional Cast On

Special Stitches

Sl1 wyib – Slip one stitch with yarn held in back

Pattern Notes

Beginning with a Provisional Cast-on, the cowl is worked in the round like a tube, alternating between stripes and slipped stitch patterns. The two ends are then grafted together.

Pattern

With CC and using a Provisional CO method of your choice, CO 48 sts. Join to work in the rnd, taking care not to twist sts.

Knit 2 rnds.

CC Stripe Section

Rnd 1 (MC): Knit.

Rnd 2 (MC): Purl.

Rnds 3-8 (CC): knit.

Rep Rnds 1-8, 4 (6) more times.

Plaid Section

Rnd 1 (MC): Knit.

Rnd 2 (MC): P1, k1, *p3, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.

Rnd 3 (CC): K1, sl1 wyib, *k3, sl1 wyib; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.

Rnd 4 (CC): P1, sl1 wyib, *p3, sl1 wyib; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.

Rep Rnds 1-4 until Plaid Section meas 10 (15)”.

MC Stripe Section

Rnds 1-6 (MC): Knit.

Rnd 7 (CC): Knit.

Rnd 8 (CC): Purl.

Rep Rnds 1-8, 5 (7) more times.

With CC, knit 4 rnds.

Finishing

Transfer sts from Provisional CO to spare needle. Kitchener St the two ends join.

Weave in all ends. Block to finished measurements.
