Milena Mittens + Hood Set

Now is the right time to start thinking about keeping your head and hands warm against the upcoming chill with these coordinated oversized hood and cozy mittens set.

Time: 10-15 Hour Pattern

Skill Level: Intermediate.

Size: S (M, L). See measurements in Figure 1.

Gauge: 19 sts and 24 rows = 4″ [10 cm] with MC held double in St st after blocking

Materials

Yarn:  

Super fine weight yarnGarnstudio Drops Fabel (75% wool, 25% polyamide; 224 yards [205 meters]/50 grams); 655 Wooden Rose (MC, 3 (4, 5) balls)

Medium weight yarn

Garnstudio Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk (77% alpaca, 23% silk; 153 yards [140 meters]/25 grams): 01 Off White (CC, 1 ball)

 

Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) 22” circular needle

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, 3 duffle coat buttons, crochet hook size 7 (4.5 mm), waste yarn or stitch holder

Special Stitches

M1L – make one stitch left leaning: Insert left needle from front to back under the horizontal strand between the stitches on the two needles, knit this lifted strand through the back loop to twist the stitch to the left. (1 st increased)

M1R – make one stitch right leaning: Insert left needle from back to front under the horizontal strand between the stitches on the two needles, knit this lifted strand through the front loop to twist the stitch to the right. (1 st increased)

Pattern Notes

MC is held double throughout.

Selvedge stitches (the first and last stitch of each row) are always purled.

The hoody capelet is worked flat starting with the hood worked from the front to the back and seamed in the back. Then the capelet and the inner cowl are attached by picking up stitches along the bottom part (neck) of the hood.

Mittens are worked flat in one piece and seamed on one side.

With CC and RS facing, pick-up and knit 169 (187, 204) sts along the front edges of the capelet and around the hood.

Row 9: K 1 live st tog with 1 picked-up st along front edge of capelet and hood.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block.

Sew 3 duffle coat buttons (one in the inner cowl and the other two in the capelet). Add a crochet chain on the inner opposite side of the button, long enough to pass the button through.

Cut yarn leaving a 10” tail and thread onto a tapestry needed; pull the needle through the remaining live sts, pull tight to close. Seam towards palm, leaving a 4” tail for final adjustments once the piece is seamed.

Hand

Holding the mitten with RS facing, place first 17 (18, 19) held sts back on the needle, pick up 1 st from the inner edge of the thumb, and place last 17 (18, 19) held sts back on needle. (35 (37, 39) sts)

Finishing

Weave ends and block.

Using the mattress stitch method, seam using the long tail from the CO from the bottom up towards the top. Weave in all rem ends and darn holes at thumb join, if necessary.
