Woven Gold Hat and Cowl Set

Inspired by a river walk, the Woven Gold Set uses a cable panel to imitate the winding path of a river with a pretty background pattern adding interest and texture. This cozy cabled cowl and matching beanie will surely be favorites this winter.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Hat: To fit head circumference 20 (22, 24)”; Shown in size 22”; Cowl: 24” [60 cm] circumference and 8.5” [22 cm] height after blocking

Gauge: 20 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 (100% Peruvian highland wool; 220 yards [200 meters]/100 grams): #7827 Goldenrod (1 ball for each part of set)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) 16” [40 cm] circular needles, US size 7 (4.5 mm) 16” [40 cm] circular and set of 4 DPNs
Notions: 1 stitch marker, cable needle, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Pfb: Purl into front and back of st.
P2tog: Purl 2 stitches together.
P3tog:  Purl 3 stitches together.
Ssk: Slip, slip, knit.
Sk2po: Slip, knit two together, pass slip stitch over.
1/1 RC: Slip 1 st to cn and hold in back, k1, k1 from cn.
1/1 LC: Slip 1 st to cn and hold in front, k1, k1 from cn.
1/1 RPC: Slip 1 st to cn and hold in back, k1, p1 from cn.
1/1 LPC: Slip 1 st to cn and hold in front, p1, k1 from cn.

Pattern Notes

The beanie is knit in the round from the bottom up. The cable panel is worked over 20 stitches at the center front. This 20 stitch panel is also provided in chart format and converges at the ribbed crown (see separate chart for crown shaping).
An optional pompom can be attached to the crown of the hat upon finishing.
The cowl is worked in the round. The pattern comprises of a 20 st cable panel and a 22 st panel of textured rib stitches. This pattern is repeated three times around the cowl. The 20 st cable panel is also provided in chart format.

Beanie Pattern

With smaller needles CO 88 (96, 104). Join for working in the round and place marker for beginning of round.

Brim

Rnd 1: *P2, k2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 until piece measures from cast on edge; 3 (4, 5) cm.
Change to larger needles.

Draw up remaining st and fasten off. Weave in yarn ends. Wet block, taking care not to overstretch. Attach a pompom to crown if desired.
