Vibrant Colorwork Set

Brighten up your wardrobe with this pink-and-blue set featuring a hat, cowl and mitts. Play with the colors to create a set that’s perfectly you!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Fingerless mitts: S/M, L to fit hand with 6.6”, 7.6” circumference; Cowl: 30.5” x 6”; Hat: To fit 21-22” head circumference

Gauge: 22 sts = 4” in stockinette/slip-stitch pattern on U.S. 5 (3.75 mm) needles

Materials

Yarn: Knit Picks Swish DK (100% superwash merino wool; 123 yards [112 meters]/50 grams): Marine Heather (C1, 2 skeins), Rouge (C2, 2 skeins)
Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles (16”, DPN or 32” circular needles if using magic loop method), US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles (16”, DPN or 32” circular needles if using magic loop method)
Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, US size 0 (2.0 mm) circular needle to pick up stitches (optional); 3 Sew-on Snaps Size 10, Sewing Needle, matching thread (for the Cowl)

Abbreviations

Sl1wyif: Slip 1 st knitwise with yarn in front
Slp3wyib: Slip 3 sts purlwise with yarn in back 

Special Stitches

2×2 Ribbing Pattern: *K2, p2* – rep from * to end of round. 

Pattern Worked Flat (Back and Forth – Multiple of 6 sts plus 5 additional sts)
Row 1 (RS): Using C1, k all sts.
Row 2 (WS): K1, *p3, k3* – rep from * to 4 sts rem, p3, k1.
Row 3 (RS): Change to C2,  k1, *slp3wyib, k3* – rep from * to 4 sts rem, slp3wyib, k1.
Row 4 (WS): K1, p1, *sl1wyif, p5* – rep from * to 3 sts rem, sl1wyif, p1, k1.
Row 5 (RS): K all sts.
Row 6 (WS): K4 *p3, k3* – rep from * to 1 st rem, k1.
Row 7 (RS): Switch to C1, k4, *sl3wyib, k3* – rep from * to 1 st rem, k1.

Rnd 2: P1, *k3, p3* – rep from * to 5 sts rem, k3, p2.
Rnd 3: Change to C2,  k1, *slp3wyib, k3* – rep from * to 5 sts rem, slp3wyib, k2.
Rnd 4: *sl1wyib, k5* – rep from * to 4 sts rem, sl1wyib, k3.
Rnd 5: K all sts.
Rnd 6: K1, *p3, k3* – rep to 5 sts rem, p3, k2.
Rnd 7: Change to C1, s1wyib, *k3, sl3wyib* – rep to 5 sts rem, k3, sl2wyib.

Fingerless Mitts Pattern (Make 2)

With C1 and US size 4 (3.5 mm) needles, CO 36 (40) sts, join in the round.
Work 20 rounds in 2×2 ribbing.
Switch to US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles, k 1 round, inc. 0 (2) sts. (36 (42) sts on needles)
K 1 more round.
Cont working flat (back and forth) to work the thumb opening.
Next Row (RS): BO 1 st at beginning of row, work Color Pattern Row 1.
Cont working Color Pattern Rows 1-8 3 times.
Work Color Pattern Rows 1-5 1 time.
At the end of pattern Row 5, CO 1 st, PM, join in round.
Work Rnds 6-8 once.
Work Rnds 1-8 once.
Work 3 more rounds in stockinette st in C1, dec 0 (2) sts.  (36 (40) sts on needles)
With C1 and U.S. 4 (3.5 mm) needles, work 7 rounds in 2×2 ribbing.
Next Rnd: BO all sts in pattern.
With C1 and smaller sized needle or US size 0 (2.0 mm) needle, pick up 28 sts around the thumb opening.
With US size 4 (3.5 mm) needles work 5 rounds in 2×2 ribbing.
Next Rnd: BO all sts in pattern.

Finishing

Sew in all loose ends. Lightly block to even out slip-stitch pattern and stitches. 

Cowl Pattern

With C1 and U.S. 5 (3.75 mm) needles, CO 156 sts.
2×2 Ribbing Row 1 (RS): K3, *p2, k2 * – rep from * to 1 st rem, k1.
2×2 Ribbing Row 2 (WS): K1, *p2, k2 * – rep from * to 3 sts rem, p2, k1.
Rep last 2 rows, 4 more times.
Work Rows 1-8 of Color Pattern a total for 4 times.
Note: When working the first row after the 2×2 ribbing, Row 1 of Color Pattern, dec 1 st. (155 sts)
Work Rows 1 and 2 of Color Pattern one more time.
K one row, inc 1 st. (156 sts)
2×2 Ribbing Row 1 (WS): K1, *p2, k2 * – rep from * to 3 sts rem, p2, k1.
2×2 Ribbing Row 2 (RS): K3, *p2, k2 * – rep from * to 1 st rem, k1.
Rep last 2 rows, 3 more times.
Work Row 2 one more time.
BO all sts in pattern in next row.

Side Ribbing Band

With Color 1 – using smaller sized needles or US size 0 (2 mm) needles starting on the right side of short edge with RS of fabric facing, pick-up and knit 44 sts.
Switch to US size 4 (3.5 mm) needles.
Row 1 (WS): P3, *k2, p2* – rep to 3 sts rem, p2, k1.
Row 2 (RS): P1, *k2, p2* – rep to 3 sts rem, k3.
Rep last 2 rows, 3 times.
Work Row 2 one more time.
BO all sts in pattern in next row.
Rep for other short edge.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Lightly block to even out slip-stitch pattern and stitches. Fold cowl over and sew 3 sew-on snaps into place.

Hat Pattern
With C1 and U.S. 5 (3.75 mm) needles, CO 112 sts. PM, join in the round.
2×2 Ribbing Rnd: *K2, p2 * – rep from * to end of round.
Note: When working the first row after the 2×2 ribbing, Row 1 of Color Pattern, inc 2 sts. (114 sts)
Work Rnds 1-8 a total of 3 times.
Work Rnds 1-2 one time.
Next Rnd: K2tog, k57 sts k2tog, k to end of round.
Continue knitting in stockinette stitch until piece measures 5.5” from CO edge.
Set-up Rnd: *K28, PM* – rep from * 3 times, K28 to end of round.
Decrease Rnd: *K to 2 sts before next marker, k2tog* – rep from * 4 times.
Rep Decrease Rnd until 8 sts remain.

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail. Thread the tail through the remaining 8 sts and pull tightly to fasten off. Weave in all ends.  Block hat to shape. yarn ball
