Tree and Leaf Pullover

Inspired by JRR Tolkien’s “Tree and Leaf” collection of fairy tales, Tree and Leaf is an asymmetrical, seamless cardigan mostly worked flat from the top down with short raglan sleeves. The design features an easy and fun lace panel for sleeves, front waist shaping and twisted rib edges.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Bust Size = 32.25 (36.5, 40.5, 44.25, 48.5)” with overlapping bands to fit bust 32-34 (36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50)”; 0-2” negative ease recommended; Shown in size 32.25”

Gauge: 21.5 sts x 29 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st on larger needle after wet blocking; 23 sts x 28 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Front Lace Chart on larger needle after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend (70% merino, 30% silk; 150 yards [137 meters]/50 grams): Pacific (4 (5, 7, 8, 9) skeins)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) 24” circular needles, US size 7 (4.5 mm) 24” circular or different size to obtain gauge
Notions: Markers (4 in color A, 6 in color B), stitch holders, tapestry needle, two .75” buttons

Abbreviations

M/sm/rm: Marker, slip marker, remove marker.
M1L: Make one left: pick up the bar between the sts from front to back with the left needle, and knit this bar through the back loop.
M1R: Make one right: pick up the bar between the sts from back to front with the left needle, and knit it through the front loop.
M7in1: Make 7 sts in one: k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1 in the same stitch.
MA/mB: Marker in color A, marker in color B.
Puk: Pick up and knit.
Dl1-k2tog-psso: Slip one stitch knitwise, knit the next 2 stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over.

Keep in mind that the lace pattern stitch count differs from row to row: for an easy reading, the stitch count will be indicated by subtracting the lace sts between markers B.

You have 2 markers A to mark the waist shaping and 2 markers B to delimit the right front chart repeat.

Body

Row 1 (WS): P to end.
Row 2 (RS): K to mB, smB, work Front Lace Chart once, smB, k2.
Work these 2 rows for approx. 2” from underarm, ending with a wrong side row. This is the established pattern.

Decrease for Waist

Decrease row (RS): * K to 3 sts before mA, k2tog, k1, smA, k1, ssk rep from * once more, k to mB, smB, work Front Lace Chart once, smB, k2.
Work 13 rows as established.
Work these last 14 rows 2 more times. (12 total sts decreased)
If necessary, work as established until the piece measures approx. 8” from underarm, ending with a wrong side row.

Increase for Hips

Increase row (RS): * K to 1 st before mA, m1R, k1, smA, k1, m1L rep from * once more, k to mB, smB, work Front Lace Chart once, smB, k2.
Work 7 rows as established.
Work these last 8 rows 3 more times. (16 total sts increased)
Work as established until piece measures approx. 14” from underarm or to desired length. End with Row 12 of Front Lace Chart and remove all markers as you come to them. (177 (201, 223, 243, 267) total sts)

Edging

Switch to smaller needle.
Row 1 (RS): P2, * k1tbl, p1 rep from * to 3 sts before end, k1tbl, p2.
Row 2 (WS): P2, * p1tbl, k1 rep from * to 3 sts before end, p1tbl, k2.
Work these 2 rows for 1”. Bind off in rib pattern.

Sleeves (Make Two the Same)

With larger needle and right side facing, begin in the middle of underarm CO, puk 6 (7, 7, 7, 8) sts, place all sleeve sts onto a spare needle, k to mB, smB, work Sleeve Lace Chart acc. pattern, smB, k to end, puk 6 (7, 7, 7, 8) sts. Pm and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist sts. (52 (56, 62, 70, 76) total sts (plus lace pattern sts between mB))
Next rnd: K5 (6, 6, 6, 7) sts, k2tog, k to mB, smB, work Sleeve Lace Chart once, smB, k to 7 (8, 8, 8, 9) sts before end, ssk, k to end. (2 sts decreased)
Rnds 1-8: K to mB, smB, work Sleeve Lace Chart once, smB, k to end. Remembering to knit all even rnds of Sleeve Lace Chart.
Decrease rnd: K1, k2tog, work in pattern to 3 sts before end, ssk, k1. (2 sts decreased)
Work as established until piece measures approx. 3″, ending with Sleeve Lace Chart Row 12. Removing mB.
Next rnd: Work Decrease rnd. (55 (59, 65, 73, 79) total sts)

Edging

Switch to smaller needle.
Next rnd: P1, * k1tbl, p1 rep from * to end.
Work this rnd for 1”. Bind off in rib pattern.

Neckband

Using smaller needle, starting on the top of right front, puk 97 (105, 111, 115, 119) sts across the neckline. You will need an odd number of sts.
Next row (WS): P to end.
Rows 1 and 3 (RS): K1, * p1, k1tbl rep from * to 2 sts before end, p1, k1.
Rows 2 and 4 (WS): P1, * k1, p1tbl rep from * to 2 sts before end, k1, p1.
Bind off in ri pattern.

Buttonhole Band

Using smaller needle, begin at the bottom edge of right front with right side facing; puk 101 (103, 107, 113, 121) sts. (Pick up approx. 3 sts every 4 rows along right front). You will need an odd number of sts.
Rows 1, 3 and 7 (WS): P1tbl, * k1, p1tbl rep from * to end.
Rows 2, 4, 6 and 8 (RS): K1tbl, * p1, k1tbl rep from * to end.
Row 5 (WS) buttonholes row: P1tbl, k1, p1tbl, yo, p2tog tbl, (k1, p1tbl) 5 times, yo, p2tog tbl, * k1, p1tbl rep from * to end.
Bind off in rib pattern.

Button Band

Using smaller needle, begin at the top edge of left front, with right side facing; puk the same number of sts as you did for the buttonhole band.
Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 (WS): P1tbl, * k1, p1tbl rep from * to end.
Rows 2, 4, 6 and 8 (RS): K1tbl, * p1, k1tbl rep from * to end.
Bind off in rib pattern.

Finishing

Attach buttons to button band. Close any underarm holes if necessary and weave in ends. Soak and block to measurements. yarn ball
