Lagoon Pullover

Despite its simple lines and clean look, this pattern features many small details to achieve a perfectly oversized fit. These intricate details, combined with the contemporary feel of this design, will be complementary to all body types and will make this basic pullover a wardrobe staple.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: XS (S, M, L, XL) to fit bust 30 (34, 38, 42, 45)” [76 (86, 96, 106, 116) cm]; 4” of positive ease

Gauge: 18 sts and 23 rows = 4 inches (10 cm), on larger needles in stockinette after blocking

Materials

Yarn: Valley Yarns Goshen (48% Peruvian cotton, 46% modal, 6% silk; 92 yards [84 meters]/50 grams): Waterfall (10 (11, 12, 13, 14) skeins)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) and US size 8 (5.0 mm) 30″circular needles
Notions: 10 markers (1 different color), tapestry needle

Abbreviations

K2tog: Knit two sts together
Ssk: Slip, slip, knit
K1tbl: Knit 1 st through back loop
P1tbl: Purl 1 st through back loop
BOR: Beginning of round marker
M1KR: With RN, pick up thread between next st on LN and st just worked, from front to back, and put in on LN, knit this stitch (1 stitch increased)
M1KL: With RN, pick up thread between next st on LN and st just worked, from back to front, and put in on LN, knit this stitch through back loop (1 stitch increased)
M1P: With RN, pick up thread between next st on LN and st just worked, from front to back, and put in on LN, purl this stitch through front loop (1 stitch increased)
W&T: Bring working yarn to front of work, slip next st on RN, bring working yarn to back, “wrapping” this slipped stitch, slip stitch from RN back to LN, turn work
“wrapped stitch”: A stitch, that has been slipped and “wrapped” when you did W&T

Pattern Notes

The body is knitted in the round, from bottom up, to armholes, then front and back are knitted separately. Sleeves are knitted flat. Then pieces are sewn together and a neckline is picked up and worked in twisted rib in the round.
Chart A: Read chart A right to left every row (as it represents circular knitting); the chart shows only RS of fabric.
Chart B: If knitted in the round, read chart B right to left every row; if knitted flat, read chart B right to left on odd rows, and left to right on even rows; the chart shows only RS of fabric.
Chart C: Read chart Dright to left on odd rows, and left to right on even rows; the chart shows only RS of fabric.

Pattern

Body Hem

With US size 6 (4.0 mm) needles, using cable cast on, cast on 154 (174, 190, 210, 226) sts, join to knit in the round, being extra careful not to twist the sts. Place marker at the beginning of the round (BOR, it should be different color than others).
Rnd 1: (k1tbl, p1) 38 (43, 47, 52, 56) times, k1tbl, PM2 (right side marker), (p1, k1tbl) 38 (43, 47, 52, 56) times, p1.
Rnd 2: (k1tbl, p1) to the end of row.
You have set up the sts for knitting in twisted rib. Knit in twisted rib, repeating last row, for 1” (2.5 cm), slipping markers when you come to them.

Shaping Lower Back

Next Row (RS): Work twisted rib to 19 (21, 23, 25, 27) sts to BOR, W&T.
Next Row (WS): (p1tbl, k1) to 20 (22, 24, 26, 28) sts to M2, p1tbl, W&T.
Next Row (RS): Work twisted rib to last “wrapped stitch”, work next 4 sts in twisted rib, purling “wrap” together with wrapped st, W&T.
Next Row (WS): Work in twisted rib to last “wrapped stitch”, work next 4 sts in twisted rib, purling “wrap” together with wrapped st, W&T.

Body

Set up rows cluster:
Rnd 1: (Note: when you meet “wrapped” st, knit “wrap” together with wrapped st), knit 34 (39, 43, 48, 52) sts, PM3, k3, p1, k1tbl, p1, k3, PM4, knit 34 (39, 43, 48, 52) sts to M2, SM2, k2, work twisted rib to 2 sts to BOR, k2.
Switch to larger needles (US size 8 / 5.0 mm).
Rnd 2: Knit 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) sts, yo, k2tog, knit to M3, SM3, k1, yo, ssk, p1, k1tbl, p1, k2tog, yo, k1, SM4, knit to 7 (8, 9, 10, 11) sts to M2, ssk, yo, knit to M2, SM2, k2, yo, PM5, k2, work next 32 (37, 41, 46, 50) sts in twisted rib, p2tog, PM6, k1tbl, PM7, p2tog, work in twisted rib to 4 sts to BOR, k2, PM8, yo, k2.
You have set up sts and markers for further knitting: BOR – right side marker, M2 – left side marker, M3 and M4 – front chart A markers, M5 and M8 – mark beginning and end of twisted rib pattern on back (you will decrease 2 sts on the back by making CTD (central twisted decrease, see abbreviations), and making yarn overs on both sides of twisted rib (see further directions) every other row, M6 and M7 –mark back central twisted stitch.
Note: there will not be further SM (slip marker) instructions, slip markers when you meet one.
Go on knitting as follows:
Rnd 3: Knit to M3, work row 2 (on further rows read as “next row”) of Chart A, M4, knit to M2, knit to M5, k2, work in twisted rib to M6, k1tbl, M7, work in twisted rib to 2 sts to M8, knit to BOR.

For Sizes XS & S
Repeat rnds 3-4 until there is 3 sts (2 knit and 1 purl) between M5 and M6, and M7 and M8 left, ending with row 3. Start knitting chart B between markers M5 and M8, as follows:

Repeat last two rounds until the piece measures 40 cm from cast on edge measuring along front center, ending with even row.
Note: if you want to change the body length and make it shorter, you may not yet get 3 stitches (2 knit and 1 purl) between M5 and M6 & M7 and M8 before armhole starts. If so, work body to desired length, then work armholes as given for larger sizes.

For Sizes M, L, XL
Repeat last two rounds until the piece measures 40 cm from cast on edge measuring along front center, ending with row 4.
Note: if you want to change the body length and make it longer, remember, when there are 3 stitches (2 knit and 1 purl) between M5 and M6, and M7 and M8 left, before armhole starts, work Chart B for back, as given for sizes XS and S.

Armhole Shaping

For sizes XS & S
Next row (odd row): Knit to M3, remove M3, k3, PM, p1, PM, k1tbl, PM, p1, PM, k3, remove M4, knit to 3 (3, -, -, -) sts to M2, cast off 5 (6, -, -, -) sts, knit to M5, work next row of Chart B, M8, knit to 2 (3, -, -, -) sts to BOR, cast off 5 (6, -, -, -) sts.
You have divided body into front and back, which now will be knitted separately.
71 (81, -, -, -) sts on the needles for front and 73 (81, -, -, -) for back.
Place open back sts on stitch holder.

For sizes M, L, XL
Next row (odd row): Knit to M3, remove M3, k3, PM, p1, PM, k1tbl, PM, p1, PM, k3, remove M4, knit to – (-, 4, 4, 5) sts to M2, cast off – (-, 7, 8, 9) sts (removing M2), knit to M5, k2, work in twisted rib to M6, k1tbl, M7, work in twisted rib to 2 sts to M8, k2, M8, knit to – (-, 3, 4, 4) sts to BOR, cast off – (-, 7, 8, 9) sts.

Front Neckline Shaping

No further eyelets will be made, so work the sts in pattern, work twisted rib in the center as was set up by previous rows, between markers, and knit sts on both sides of it, AT THE SAME TIME, keep working raglan decreases and neckline as follows:

Right Front

Next row (RS): K1, k2tog, work 7 (7, 12, 12, 15) sts, turn work, leaving rest sts on holder. (9 (9, 14, 14, 17) sts)
Next row (WS): Bind off in pattern 4 (4, 4, 4, 5) sts, work to the end.
Next row (RS): K1, k2tog, work to the end of row.
Next row (WS): Bind off in pattern 4 (4, 4, 4, 5) sts, work to end.
Repeat last two rows 0 (0, 1, 1, 1) times more.
No stitches left.

Left Front

Next row (RS): Holding front right side up, rejoin yarn and bind off in pattern 21 (27, 21, 25, 27) central sts, work to last 3 sts, ssk, k1. (9 (9, 14, 14, 17) sts)
Next row (WS): Work in pattern to end.
Next row (RS): Bind off in pattern 4 (4, 4, 4, 5) sts, work to 3 sts to end, ssk, k1.
Repeat last two rows 0 (0, 1, 1, 1) times more.

Back

With right side up, rejoin yarn and start knitting as follows, with US size 8 (5.0 mm) needles:

Next row (WS): Work in pattern next to end.
Repeat last two rows until there are 3 sts (2 knit and 1 purl) between M5 and M6, and M7 and M8 left, ending with WS row. Remove markers 5, 7 and 8. Set up sts as follows:

Finishing

Wet-block sweatshirt to measurements. Sew sleeve seams and raglan seams.

Neck Binding

With US size 6 (4.0 mm) 16” needles, pick up and knit along neckline, beginning with a right sleeve and back join seam, 27 (31, 36, 40, 46) sts along back neckline, 8 (11, 12, 15, 20) sts along top of left sleeve, 31 (37, 40, 46, 50) sts along front neckline, 8 (11, 12, 15, 20) sts along top of right sleeve, PM.
Next row (RS): (k1tbl, p1) to the end of row, SM.
Repeat last row, until neck binding measures 1” (2.5 cm). Bind off all sts on next row in purl.
Weave in all ends. yarn ball
