Hidden Hearts Fair Isle Sweater

This fair isle sweater features a yoke with, you guessed it, hidden hearts amongst the intricate colorwork details. While Valentine’s Day is around the corner, this is a sweater you can knit and wear all winter with its trendy teal and burnt orange color pairing.

Needles: US 4 (3.5 mm): 16” circular and dpns (Garter Stitch), US 5 (3.75 mm): 16” and 32” circular and dpns (Stockinette Stitch), US 6 (4 mm): 32” circular (Colorwork Pattern)

Notions: Stitch marker, stitch holders or waste yarn, tapestry needle.

Special Stitches

Trim Color Pattern (multiple of 4 sts)

Rnd 1: *K2 with MC, k1 with CC1, k1 with MC; rep from * around.

Rnd 2: *K2 with MC, p1 with CC1, k1 with MC; rep from * around.

Work Rnds 1 and 2 for patt.

Yoke Pattern (multiple of 8 sts)

Stockinette Stitch

Knit all sts, every rnd.

Short-Rows

w&t, knit row: With yarn in back, slip next st purlwise onto right needle, bring yarn to front of work, return slipped st to left needle, bring yarn to back of work, then turn work.

w&t, purl row: With yarn in front, slip next st purlwise onto right needle, bring yarn to back of work, return slipped st to left needle, bring yarn to front of work, then turn work.

Hide Wraps, knit row: Pick up the wrap from the front with the right needle and knit together with the st it wraps.

Hide Wraps, purl row: pick up the wrap through back of loop with right needle and purl together with the st it wraps.

Backward Loop Cast-on Method

*Wrap yarn around left thumb from front to back and secure in palm with other fingers, insert right needle upwards through strand on thumb, slip loop from thumb onto needle, pulling yarn to tighten; rep from * for desired number of sts.

With smallest circular and MC, use the Long-Tail method to CO 88 (92, 92, 96, 96, 100, 100, 104, 104, 108) sts. Do not join.

Knit 1 row. Pm for beg of rnd and join to work in the rnd.

(Note: When using the Long-Tail cast-on, turning then knitting before joining to work in the round—as written—will show a garter ridge/purl row at the cast-on edge. If using a different cast-on, join to work in the round after the cast-on, purl 1 rnd, then knit 1 rnd before continuing.)
