Grandma’s Favorite Sweater

This lovely sweater begins with an entrelac piece in the middle front, knit from variegated yarn. With a matching back piece and a cowl neck for added comfort and warmth, this sweater is a great addition to your winter wardrobe.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Small, medium, large, 1X, 2X to fit bust 36″, 40″, 44″, 48″, 52″; total length: 25″; armhole depth: 9″, 9″, 9½”, 9½”, 10″; sleeve length to underarm: 18″

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch with (A) and size 8 needles or size to obtain gauge

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable (100% acrylic; 280 yards [256 meters]/100 grams): #3940 Echo (A, 2 balls); Red Heart Soft (100% acrylic; 256 yards [234 meters]/141 grams): #9779 Berry (B, 3 (4, 5, 5, 6) balls)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm), US size 7 (4.5 mm) and US size 8 (5.0 mm) needles
Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle

Inc in first stitch: Knit in front and back of the same stitch.

Pattern

Step 1

Base Triangles
Row 1 (WS): P2. Turn.
Row 2: K2. Turn.
Row 3: P2, p first st on LH needle. Turn.
Row 4: K3. Turn.
Row 5: P3, p first st on LH needle. Turn.
Row 6: K4. Turn.
Cont. until there are 10 sts on RH needle on the purl row. DO NOT TURN. Leave these sts on the needle and start from row 1 to make the next triangle. Cont. until all sts are knit.

Step 2

Pick up and knit 10 st from the side of the last triangle.

Side Triangle 1
Turn work.
Row 1: K2. Turn.
Row 2: P2. Turn.
Row 3: Inc into first st, ssk. Turn.
Row 4: P3. Turn.
Row 5: Inc into first st, k 1, ssk. Turn.
Row 6: P4. Turn.
Row 7: Inc into first st, k 2, ssk. Turn.
Cont. until 10 sts are on RH needle. DO NOT TURN.

Rectangle 1

Pick up and knit 10 sts along the 2nd side of the same triangle, top to bottom. Turn.
Row 2: P10. Turn.
Row 3: K9, ssk. Turn.
Repeat these two rows until all stitches from second base triangle are worked.

Rectangle 2 and All Other Rectangles

Work same as first rectangle working on the 2nd side of the 2nd triangle. Cont. same way until all rectangles are made.

Side Triangle 2

Pick up and knit 10 sts from 2nd side of the last rectangle. Turn.
Row 1: P2tog, p8. Turn.
Row 2: K9. Turn.
Row 3: P2tog, p7.Turn.
Cont. until 1 stitch remains from the triangle. DO NOT TURN.
Pick up and purl 9 sts from the triangle just made. (10 sts on needle)
Turn.

Step 3

Pick up and purl 10 sts at the side of the next triangle or rectangle. Turn.

Rectangles Worked on the WS
Row 1: K10.Turn.
Row 2: P8, p2tog. Turn.
Cont. the same way until all sts from first rectangle are knit.

Step 4 (Bind off triangles)

Pick up and purl 10 sts along the next rectangle, turn. (11 sts on needle)
* Row 1: K9, ssk. Turn.
Row 2: P9, p2tog. Turn.
Row 3: K8, ssk. Turn.
Row 4: P8, p2tog. Turn.
Row 5: K7, ssk. Turn.
Row 6: P7, p2tog. Turn.
Continue until 2 sts left on needle.
Last row: Ssk, Do not turn. Pick up 10 sts along next rectangle and repeat from * until all rectangles are bound off.

Back Entralac Panel

Cast on 30 sts. Work as step 1 then step 2-3 until piece measures 20″. Work step 4 for binding off.

Front Entralac Panel

Cast on 30 sts. Work as step 1 then step 2-3 until piece measures 18″. Work step 4 for binding off. 

Left Side of Body

With the right side of the front panel facing you and (B) pick up and knit 60 sts along the edge of the front panel then cable cast on 24 sts. Pick up and knit 72 sts along the right side of the back panel. (156 sts)
P42 (42, 41, 41, 40) PM, p72 (72, 74, 74, 76) (sleeve), PM, p42 (42, 41, 41, 40).
Work Stockinette stitch until piece measures 4″ (5″, 6″, 7″, 8″). On the next right side row, bind off 42 (42, 41, 41, 40) sts, knit to end of row.
Bind off 42 (42, 41, 41, 40) sts and p72 (72, 74, 74, 76) sts for sleeve.

Sleeve

Work Stockinette stitch decreasing on both sides every 8 rows, 5 times and every 6 rows 8 times. (46 (46, 48, 48, 50) sts)
Decrease 4 (4, 2, 2, 0) sts across row. (42 (42, 46, 46, 50) sts)
With size 6 needles work 2X2 ribbing for 3″. Bind off all sts.

Right Side of Body

With the right side of the back panel facing you and (B) pick up and knit 72 sts along the edge of the back panel then cable cast on 24 sts. Pick up and knit 60 sts along the right side of the front panel. (156 sts)
Work same as back side of the body and sleeve.

Finishing

Front Bottom Edge
With size 6 needles, evenly pick up and knit 90 (98, 102, 106, 110) sts. Work 2X2 ribbing for 3″. Bind off all sts loosely.

Back Bottom Edge
Work same as front.

Collar
With size 6 needles and starting from the center of back neck, evenly pick up and knit 120 sts. Work 2X2 ribbing in round for 3½”. Switch to size 7 needles and work 2X2 ribbing for 3½”. Switch to size 8 needles and work 2X2 ribbing for 3″. (10″ length of collar)

Bind off all sts loosely.
Sew side and sleeve seams.
Weave in all ends.
Block sweater to size. yarn ball
