Fireside Glow Socks

Delight in the warmth of these cozy socks. The beautiful pattern uses chain cables, a twisted rib cuff and knit and purl textures to give you the coffee shop comfort of a crisp October day.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Women’s Small (Medium, Large), to fit 7 (8, 9)” / [18 (20, 23) cm] foot and leg circumference.

Gauge: 32 sts and 44 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st.

Yarn: Madelinetosh Tosh Sock (100 % Superwash Merino; 395 yards [361 meters]/100 grams): Glazed Pecan, 1 skein

Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm): 2 circulars, one long circular, or DPNs

Notions: Markers (optional); cable needle (cn); tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

The socks are worked top down with a twisted rib cuff, traditional slip stitch heel flap and riverbed gusset with an optional ordinary gusset. The design features chain cables, knit, and purl textures.

Pattern

CO 56 (64, 72) sts, join to work in the rnd using magic loop method or preferred method of small diameter.

Cuff

Rnds 1-16: Work in Twisted 1×1 Rib. Cuff should meas 1½” / [3.8 cm] from CO edge.

Leg

Work Chart Pattern twice around until Sock meas 7 (8, 9)” / [18 (20, 23) cm] or to desired length from CO edge.

Heel Flap

The heel flap is worked back and forth only on the 28 (32, 36) Heel sts (the back half of the sock). The rem sts will not be worked during the heel flap or heel turn.
Row 1 (RS): *Sl1 purlwise, k1; rep from * to end.
Row 2 (WS): Sl1 purlwise, p to end.
Rep Rows 1-2 until 28 (32, 36) rows are complete.

Heel Turn

Note: Work slip sts purlwise (sl1 purlwise) throughout unless otherwise instructed.
Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k16 (18, 20), ssk, k1, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1, p7 (7, 7), p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Sl1, k8 (8, 8), ssk, k1, turn.
Row 4: Sl1, p9 (9, 9), p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 5: Sl1, k10 (10, 10), ssk, k1, turn.
Row 6: Sl1, p11 (11, 11), p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 7: Sl1, k12 (12, 12), ssk, k1, turn.
Row 8: Sl1, p13 (13, 13), p2tog, p1, turn.

Riverbed Gusset

Note: After the Heel Turn, place markers on either side of the rem Heel Flap sts. These sts will be decreased every other row until 2 sts rem.

Work across Heel sts, pick up 14 (16, 18) sts along the side of the heel. Pick up 1 st from the row below the first instep st to prevent a hole. Work across instep sts, continuing Chart Pattern.
Pick up 1 st from the row below the first heel st to prevent a hole. Pick up 14 (16, 18) sts along the side of the heel. Work remainder of Heel sts. Work across Instep sts, maint est Chart Pattern. This is the new beg of rnd – 76 (86, 96) sts.

Shape Riverbed Gusset

Rnd 1 (Dec): Heel: K to m, sm, ssk, k to 2 sts before second m, k2tog, k to end of Needle 1 – 2 sts dec’d.
Instep: Cont even in Chart Pattern.
Rnd 2: Work even around.
Rep Rnds 1-2 until 2 sts rem between markers.

Shape Second Riverbed Gusset
On Needle 1 there should be 32 (36, 40) sts. Move the markers over 2 sts before and after the other markers – 60 (68, 76) sts.
Cont Rnds 1-2 until 56 (64, 72) sts rem.
Note: These numbers might need adjusting if more or less sts were picked up.

Traditional Heel (optional)

Gusset

Work across Heel sts, pick up 14 (16, 18) sts along the side of the heel. Pick up 1 st from the row below the first instep st to prevent a hole. Work across Instep sts, maint est Chart Pattern.
Pick up 1 st from the row below the first heel st to prevent a hole. Pick up 14 (16, 18) sts along the side of the heel. Work remainder of Heel sts. Work across Instep sts, maint est Chart Pattern. This is the new beg of rnd.

Shape Gusset

Rnd 1 (Dec): Heel: K1, ssk, k to 3 sts from end, k2tog, k1.
Instep: Work even in Chart Pattern.
Rnd 2: Work even around.
Rep Rnds 1-2 until 56 (64, 72) sts rem.

Foot

Cont working in Sock Chart Pattern until Foot meas 1¾ (2, 2¼)” / [4.45 (5, 5.72) cm] shorter than desired total length. Complete Instep sts. This is the new beg of rnd.

Toe Welt

Cont with Rnds 1-2 of Chart Pattern for size.

Over the next 8 rnds, work the sole plain and work the Welt Pattern over the Instep sts as follow:

Rows 1-2: P28 (32, 36), k28 (32, 36).

Rows 3-4: K56 (64, 72).

Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 1-4.

Shape Toe

Rnd 1 (Dec):
Sole: K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Instep: K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Rnd 2: Work even around.
Rep Rnds 1-2 until 36 (40, 44) sts rem.
Rep Rnd 1 until 16 sts rem – 8 Instep sts, 8 Sole sts.

Finishing

Holding Needle 1 and Needle 2 together, graft sts using Kitchener Stitch.
Weave in ends.

Work second Sock.
