Boccioli Infinity Scarf

Boccioli Infinity Scarf

Boccioli (blossoms in Italian) is an infinity scarf worked sideways to the desired length, followed by some grafting. Its boldest feature is in its simple lacework that’s enlivened by small bobbles in a contrasting, yet delicate, color. The lace pattern resembles the leaves of Italian heirloom zucchini, with flowers on the top of some branches, each one presented in different lengths to mimic a natural flowering pattern. The design has intentionally a vintage feel, reminiscent of old-hand embroidery with its small bobbles integrated in the lace stitches and the use of a color choice with mild contrasts.

Kitchener Stitch
Preparatory steps

  1. Place CO sts from the waste yarn onto a needle.
  2. Hold the 2 needles together with WS inside and RS facing out. Cut a piece of yarn 3 times the length of the piece to graft (ideally, it would be the tail of your working yarn). Thread your needle.
  3. Pass tapestry needle purlwise through the first stitch of the front needle. Leave stitch on needle.
  4. Pass tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch of the back needle, keeping yarn and tapestry needle under the needles. Leave stitch on needle.

Setup Steps 1-4 are worked only once.

Grafting knit (and garter) stitch

  1. Pass tapestry needle through the first stitch of front needle as if to knit. Drop this stitch from needle.
  2. Pass tapestry needle through the second stitch of front needle as if to purl. Leave this stitch on needle.
  3. Leaving yarn under needles, pass tapestry needle through the stitch of the back needle as if to purl. Drop this stitch from needle.
  4. Pass tapestry needle through the following stitch on the back needle as if to knit. Leave the stitch on needle.

Repeat Steps 1-4.

As you drop stitches off the needles, check the tension of your grafting row and adjust it as you go.
Note: As a common rule, a stitch gets dropped off the needle once you have passed the tapestry needle through it twice.
If you want to “knit” a stitch, you have to prepare it on the front needle as if to purl and drop it as if to knit, while on the back needle is the opposite, prepare as if to knit and drop off as if to purl.
If you want to “purl” a stitch, you have to prepare it as if to knit and drop off as if to purl on front needle, while on the back needle you have to prepare it as if to purl and drop of as if to knit.

Pattern notes

On WS rows, always purl together the stitch before the bobble together with the one left from the bobble.
It’s strongly recommended to weave in ends while knitting, “embroidering” the bobble ends, so to obtain a “mirrored bobble” on the WS of the scarf. Never work more than 5 flowers without weaving in ends. In this way, you won’t have a thousand ends to weave in at the end of the project. If you carefully embroider your flowers on the WS, you’ll obtain a scarf that’s a pleasure to see even when it shows the WS out.

Pattern

With MC and Provisional Cast-On Method, CO 44 sts.
Work 3 rows in St st.
Work the first row (WS) in Boccioli Pattern, then the second row, and insert a lifeline on it (the first RS Row in the pattern).
Continue working the Boccioli Pattern until 3 complete repeats have been worked or the scarf has reached the desired length.
It is possible to work only half repeat of the pattern (72 rows) if you want an easier pattern, but it’s recommended to include the full repeat because the complete repeat (144 rows) gives the scarf a gentle complexity that imitates the natural flowering.

Finishing

When the scarf is as long desired, leave sts on needle, unravel the Provisional CO and the provisional rows before the lifeline. Graft both sides of the scarf together using Kitchener Stitch. (Note: to graft yarn overs, simply work them as if they were knit sts.)
Weave in the Bobble ends if you didn’t it before.
Wash and gently block the piece. yarn ball

I am not finding any of the tutorial files. There is no explanation of the bobbles or provisional CO except “[Please see the attached tutorial files.]”
I know at least 5 ways bobbles can be made, although, only 3 of them might work for this pattern.
I am less worried about which of several provisional cast on is used since it is ultimately unraveled and not part of the finished piece.

  • Come on … what ever happened to having a knitting pattern of any kind … that simply allowed you to go from one row to the next? Why must it always be start this pattern stitch, here is a list of abbreviations. And oh if I remember you. The first step is the number of stitches to cast on. Oops better not forget that.
