Materials
Yarn:
Scheepjes Woolwise (100% recycled superwash merino wool; 220 yards [200 meters]/3.5 oz [100 grams]: # 746 Sea Spray 7 (7, 8, 8, 9) (10, 11, 11, 12) balls).
Needles: US size 6 (4mm) straight or circular needles, US size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles with 16” cable.
Notions: tapestry needle, locking stitch markers.
Special Stitches
Sailor’s rib pattern (multiple of 5 sts +2)
Row 1 (RS): P1, *k1b, p1, k2, p1; rep from * to last st, p1.
Row 2 (WS): P1, *k1, p2, k1, p1; rep from * to last st, p1.
Row 3: P1, *k1b, p4; rep from * to last st, p1.
Row 4: P1, *k4, p1; rep from * to last st, p1.
Always rep Rows 1-4.
Sloped BO
To prevent “stair steps” from forming between subsequent BO rows, use the sloped BO method as following: On the first BO row, bind off as usual to define the initial part of the slope. Work the next row to the last st, but do not work the last st. Turn work so that the unworked st becomes the first st on the RH needle. Sl the first st on the LH needle pwise, then BO the unworked st by lifting it over the sl st and off the needle.
Pattern notes
The back, fronts, sleeves and hood are worked flat from the bottom up and sewn together.
Some shaping occurs at the same time. Read each section thoroughly before proceeding.

With smaller needles, CO 102 (112, 126, 136, 146) (156, 166, 182, 192) sts and work in 2×2 rib for 18 rows, or until piece measures 2.75″. Cont. in Sailor’s rib patt, increasing 0 (0, 1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 0, 0) st on first row. (102 (112, 127, 137, 147) (157, 167, 182, 192) sts)
and AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 0.5″ from beg of shoulder shaping and 2 rows of shoulder shaping have been worked, BO the central 30 (32, 35, 39, 39) (41, 41, 44, 44) sts for neck. Then cont. with shoulder bind-off as instructed and work each side separately, binding off on neck side every 2nd row: 3 sts once, 2 sts once.
Front
With smaller needles, CO 102 (112, 126, 136, 146) (156, 166, 182, 192) sts and work in 2×2 rib for 18 rows, or until piece measures 2.75″. Cont. in Sailor’s rib patt, increasing 0 (0, 1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 0, 0) st on first row. (102 (112, 127, 137, 147) (157, 167, 182, 192) sts)
Shape neck & shoulders
the central 20 (22, 25, 29, 29) (31, 31, 34, 34) sts for neck. Work each side separately and BO on neck side every 2nd row: 3 sts once, 2 sts once and 1 st 5 times and AT THE SAME TIME, when Front measures BO sts at shoulder edge of next 4alt rows on each side of Front, then BO sts at shoulder edge of next 1 alt rows on each side of Front.
Fasten off.
Sleeves
Work both the same.
With smaller needles, CO 46 (46, 52, 52, 52) (56, 56, 62, 62) sts and work in 2×2 rib for 16 rows, or until piece measures 2.5″. Cont. in Sailor’s rib patt, increasing 1 (1, 0, 0, 0) (1, 1, 0, 0) st on first row. (47 (47, 52, 52, 52) (57, 57, 62, 62) sts)
AT THE SAME TIME, increase at each edge as following: 1 st on every 6th (6th, 6th, 6th, 4th) (4th, 4th, 4th, 4th) Row 14 (15, 14, 11, 22) (21, 19, 18, 15) times, then on every 0th (0th, 0th, 4th, 0th) (2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd) Row 0 (0, 0, 6, 0) (4, 9, 12, 18) times. (75 (77, 80, 86, 96) (107, 113, 122, 128) sts)
Cont. even until Sleeve measures 16.50 (17, 17, 17.50, 17.50) (18, 18, 18.50, 18.50) ” from CO, ending after a WS row.
Shape sleeve top
BO 2 (2, 2, 2, 2) (3, 3, 3, 3) sts at start of next 20 (18, 16, 12, 4) (22, 18, 12, 6) rows.
BO 3 (3, 3, 3, 3) (4, 4, 4, 4) sts at start of foll 6 (8, 10, 14, 22) (4, 8, 14, 20) rows. (17 (17, 18, 20, 22) (25, 27, 30, 30) sts)
BO all sts.
Finishing
Block pieces to measurements in schematic and sew shoulder seams of front & back panels.
Collar
With smaller circular needles and RS facing, and starting at right back shoulder, pu&k 108 (112, 116, 124, 124) (128, 128, 136, 136) sts along neck edge, join to work in the round. Work in 2×2 rib in the round for 4.25″. Change to larger circular needles. When collar measures 8.50″ BO all sts in patt.
Insert a locking stitch marker on each side, at a distance 7.75 (7.75, 8.25, 8.50, 9.25) (10.25, 10.75, 11.50, 12)” from shoulder seam, to mark the armholes.
Sew sleeves into armholes, matching sleeve cup to markers. Sew sleeve and side seams.
Weave in all ends.
