Autumn Aztec Socks

Inspired by the rich color combinations of Aztec and Southwestern motifs, these beautiful socks are perfect for a sock knitter in need of a bit of a challenge. Worked from the top down with a heel flap and gusset construction, these socks features a striking black and white pattern with rust cuffs, heels and toes.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 8 (9)” foot circumference, foot length can be adjusted to any size.

Shown in size 9”.

Gauge: For size 8”: 36 sts and 44 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stranded pattern after wet blocking on US size 1.5 (2.5 mm) needles.

For size 9”: 32 sts and 44 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stranded pattern after wet blocking on US size 2 (2.75 mm) needles.

Materials

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Lang Yarns Jawoll Superwash (75% Virgin Wool, 25% Nylon; 230 yards [210 meters]/50 grams): 83.0094 Off White (MC, 1 (1) ball), 83.0004 Black (CC1, 1 (1) ball), 83.0215 Rusty Red (CC2, 1 (1) ball).

Needles: For size 8”: US size 1 (2.25 mm) and US size 1.5 (2.5 mm) DPNs.

For size 9”: US size 1.5 (2.5 mm) and US size 2 (2.75 mm) DPNs.

Notions: Markers, tapestry needle.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the cuff down with a heel flap and gusset. The Leg and Foot are worked from charts only. Size of sock depends on gauge used.

Pattern

Cuff

With smaller needles for your size, CO 72 sts, join to work in the rnd, taking care not to twist sts.

Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.

Rep Rnd 1 until Cuff meas 1.5” from CO edge.

Leg

Switch to larger needles for your size.

Rnd 1: Work Rnd 1 of Leg patt. Each rnd of the Leg patt (36 sts of chart) is repeated twice per rnd.

Rnd 2: Work next rnd of Leg patt.

Rep Rnd 2 until entire Leg patt has been worked.

Heel Flap

Switch to smaller needles for your size. Break MC and CC1. Heel Flap and Heel Turn are worked using CC2 over 36 sts.

Rnd 1 (RS): [Sl1, k1] 18 times, turn work.

Rnd 2 (WS): Sl1, p35, turn work.

Rnd 3: Sl2, [k1, sl1] 16 times, k2, turn work.

Rnd 4: Sl1, p35, turn work.

Rep Rnds 1-4 until Heel Flap meas 2.5”, end after Rnd 2 or 4.

Heel Turn

Rnd 1 (RS): Sl1, k19, ssk, k1, turn work.

Rnd 2 (WS): Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn work.

Rnd 3: Sl1, k to 1 st before gap, ssk, k1, turn work.

Rnd 4: Sl1, p to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn work.

Rep Rnds 3-4 until all Heel sts have been worked.

On the last rep or Rnds 3-4, end after ssk/p2tog. (20 sts rem)

Note: On the last 2 rows of the heel turn you will end after the ssk/p2tog due to the number of stitches.

Rnd 5: Sl1, k across heel.

Break CC2 leaving a tail to weave in later.

Gusset

Switch to larger needles for your size.

Rnd 1: Work Rnd 1 of Foot patt across instep (top of foot), joining in MC and CC1 as necessary, pm, pick up and knit 14 sts along side of Heel Flap alternating MC and CC1 starting with MC, pm, pick up and knit 8 more sts along side of Heel Flap according to first 8 sts of Rnd 1 of Foot patt, work across Heel according to next 20 sts of Rnd 1 of Foot patt, pick up and knit 8 sts along other side of Heel Flap according to last 8 sts of Rnd 1 of Foot patt, pm, pick up and knit 14 more sts along side of Heel Flap alternating MC and CC1 starting with CC1. Place marker to indicate new beginning of rnd. (100 sts)

Rnd 2: Work next rnd of Foot patt across instep, sm, ssk with MC, work to next m in alternating MC and CC1 patt, sm, knit same rnd of Foot patt across sole, sm, work to 2 sts before end in alternating MC and CC1 patt, k2tog with MC. (2 sts dec’d)

Rnd 3: Work next rnd of Foot patt across instep, sm, work to next m in alternating MC and CC1 patt, sm, knit same rnd of Foot patt across sole, sm, work to end in alternating MC and CC1 patt.

Rep Rnds 2-3 until 74 sts rem.

Rnd 4: Work next rnd of Foot patt across instep, sm, sl st, remove next m, sl slipped st back to left needle, ssk with CC2, work same rnd of Foot patt to 1 st before next m, sl st, remove next m, sl slipped st back to left needle, k2tog with CC2. (72 sts)

Foot

Rnd 1: Work next rnd of Foot patt across instep, sm, work same rnd of Foot patt to end of rnd.

Rep Rnd 1 until you have worked Rnd 44 of Foot patt.

Rnd 2: Work Rnd 45 of Foot patt to m, sm, work Rnd 45 to end of rnd.

Rep Rnd 2 until Foot meas 2.25” shorter than desired length.

Toe

Switch to smaller needles for your size.

Rnd 1: Knit in CC1, remove m when you come to it.

Rnd 2: Knit in MC. Break MC and CC1, leaving a tail to weave in later.

Rnd 3: With CC2, k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of instep, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of rnd, k2tog, k1.

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rep Rnds 3-4 until 24 sts rem. Break CC2, leaving a 12” tail.

Kitchener toe closed.

Finishing

Weave in ends.
