Painted Desert Wall Hanging

This fun wall hanging features a variety of textures and patterns. Use it to build your skills and end up with a bold decoration for your house!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Size approximately 17” long (not including fringe) x 14” wide

Gauge: 20 sts and 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Double Seed St after wet blocking; 20 sts and 28 rows = 4” [10cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Cascade Yarns Spuntaneous Worsted (100% Extra Fine Merino; 208 yards [190 meters]/100 grams): 20 Doeskin Heather (MC, 1 skein), 06 Burnt Orange (CC1, 1 skein), 03 Black (CC2, 1 skein); Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash (100% Superwash Wool; 220 yards [201meters]/100 grams): 252 Celestial (CC3, 1 skein), 879 Very Berry (CC4, 1 skein), 876 Sandalwood (CC5, 1 skein)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5.0 mm) straight or circular

Notions: Tapestry needle, ½” dowel for hanging

Special Stitches

Double Seed Stitch

Rows 1-2: K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end.

Rows 3-4: P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.

Rep Rows 1-4 for patt.

Make Loop (ML): K1, leaving st on left needle, bring yarn forward between needles, place your left thumb up against the knitting and wrap the yarn around thumb twice, take yarn back between needles, insert tip of right needle under loops on thumb, from right to left, and knit stitch again, sl st off left needle, yo, pass the two stitches just worked over the yo.

Loop Stitch Pattern

Row 1: Knit.

Row 2: *K1, ML; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.

Row 3: Knit.

Row 4: K2, *ML, k1; rep from * to end.

Rep Rows 1-4 for patt.

Garter-Ended Stockinette Stitch

Row 1: Knit.

Row 2: K3, p to last 3 sts, k3.

Rep Rows 1-2 for patt.

Pattern Notes

This wall hanging is worked flat from the top down. It’s easy to switch out components as you please. Work the Chevron Chart twice through if you prefer, or skip the Loop Stitch Pattern.

Pattern

Using MC, CO 70 sts.

Work Rows 1-4 of Double Seed Stitch pattern 5 times, then work Rows 1-2 once more.

Switch to CC1 and work Rows 1-4 of Loop Stitch Pattern once, then work Rows 1-2 once more.

Switch to MC and work Rows 1-4 of Double Seed Stitch pattern once, then work Rows 1-2 once more.

Work Rows 1-2 of Garter-Ended Stockinette pattern 3 times.

Begin working Chevron Chart, joining CC2, CC3, and CC4 when necessary.

Note: The first and last 3 sts of chart are garter stitch. The red box is repeated 8 times across piece. Read all RS (odd numbered) rows from right to left, and WS (even numbered) rows from left to right.

Once chart is complete, break all contrast colors and continue with MC.

Work Rows 1-2 of Garter-Ended Stockinette pattern.

Continuing with MC, work Rows 1-4 of Double Seed Stitch pattern twice.

Break MC.

With CC2, knit 2 rows.

Break CC2 and join CC5.

Work Rows 1-2 of Garter-Ended Stockinette pattern 4 times.

Break CC5 and join CC1.

Work Rows 1-2 of Loop Stitch pattern.

Break CC1 and join MC.

Work Rows 1-2 of Garter-Ended Stockinette pattern twice.

Break MC and join CC2.

Knit 2 rows.

Break CC2 and join CC3.

Knit 2 rows.

Decreases for Point

Dec Row (RS and WS): K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (68 sts)

Rep Dec Row 18 more times. (32 sts)

Break CC3 and join CC2.

Work Dec Row twice. (28 sts)

Break CC2 and join MC.

Dec Row 1 (RS): K1, ssk, k to last 3, k2tog, k1. (26 sts)

Dec Row 2 (WS): K1, ssk, k1, p to last 4 sts, k1, k2tog, k1. (24 sts)

Rep Dec Rows 1-2 until 6 sts remain.

Next Row: K1, ssk, k3. (5 sts)

Next Row: Ssk, k1, k2tog.

Next Row: K3tog.

Break yarn and pull through last st to fasten off.

Finishing

Block to even out edges.

Cut yard-long lengths of CC2 to make fringe on bottom. Using two lengths of yarn at a time, thread through bottom of point, with ends even. Tie strands in an overhand knot at top to secure. Space evenly across entire bottom of hanging. Trim ends evenly.

Cut dowel to same measurement as top edge of piece. Paint dowel if desired. With whichever yarn you want, cut 4” lengths and make hanging loops, evenly spaced, at top of piece. Thread dowel through hanging loops. Hang from a hook using a long length of yarn.
