Fiorella Lace & Cable Sweater

This is a wonderful classic sweater with a cable and lace panel worked on the center front and back. The same panel is worked on the sleeves for added visual interest. This lovely piece is just what you need as we transition from summer into fall.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Bust Size 36 (40, 44, 48, 52)” to fit bust 34 (38, 42, 46, 50)”

2″ positive ease recommended.

Gauge: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Plymouth Calico (50% cotton, 50% acrylic; 268 yards [245 meters]/100 grams): 11222 Lilac (5 (5, 6, 7, 8) balls)

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) 24” straight and circular needles

US size 7 (4.5 mm) 24” straight needles

Notions: Markers, stitch holders, cable needle, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

2/2 LC: Sl 2 sts onto cn, hold in front, k2, k2 from cn

Special Stitches

3-Needle Bind-Off:

  1. With RS of both pieces facing each other, hold both needles parallel in left hand.
  2. Insert the right-hand needle kwise into the first stitch of each needle.
  3. Knit both stitches together.
  4. Knit the next 2 stitches together as described in steps 2 and 3.
  5. Slip the first stitch on the right-hand needle over the second stitch.
  6. Repeat steps 4-5 until all stitches are bound.

Lace and Cable Panel (18 sts)

Row 1: P1, yo, k3, k2tog, p1, k4, p1, ssk, k3, yo, p1.

Row 2 and even numbered rows: K the k sts and p the p sts and yo.

Row 3: P1, k1, yo, k2, k2tog, p1, k4, p1, ssk, k2, yo, k1, p1.

Row 5: P1, k2, yo, k1, k2tog, p1, k4, p1, ssk, k1, yo, k2, p1.

Row 7: P1, k3, yo, k2tog, p1, 2/2 LC, p1, ssk, yo, k3, p1.

Rep Rows 1-8 for pattern.

Pattern

Back:

With smaller needles, CO 95 (105, 115, 127, 139) sts.

Work k1, p1 ribbing for 2″ and inc 5 sts evenly across last row of ribbing, ending with a WS row. (100 (110, 120, 132, 144) sts)

Switch to larger needles.

Set-up Row (RS): K41 (46, 51, 57, 63), pm, work the lace and cable panel across next 18 sts, pm, k last 41 (46, 51, 57, 63) sts.

Work in pattern as established for 16 (16.5, 16, 16.5, 16)”, ending with a WS row.

Armhole Shaping:

BO 10 (15, 19, 23, 27) sts at beg of next 2 rows for underarm. (80 (80, 82, 86, 90) sts)

Cont even in pattern as established until piece measures 23 (24, 24, 25, 25)”, ending with a WS row.

Shape Back Neck:

Next Row (RS): Work first 30 (31, 33, 34, 35) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and BO next 20 (18, 16, 18, 20) sts, work last 30 (31, 33, 34, 35) sts. (30 (31, 33, 34, 35) shoulder sts each)

Work both sides at the same time.

Work in pattern as established and dec 1 st at each neck edge 5 times. (25 (26, 28, 29, 30) sts)

Cont even until piece measures 25 (26, 26, 27, 27)”, ending with a WS row. Place sts on holder.

Front:

Work same as Back including armholes until piece measures 19 (20, 20, 21, 21)”, ending with a WS row.

Shape Front Neck

Next Row (RS): Work first 30 (31, 33, 34, 35) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and BO next 20 (18, 16, 18, 20) sts, work last 30 (31, 33, 34, 35) sts. (30 (31, 33, 34, 35) shoulder sts each)

Work both sides at the same time.

Work in pattern as established and dec 1 st at each neck edge 5 times. (25 (26, 28, 29, 30) sts)

Cont even until piece measures 25 (26, 26, 27, 27)”, ending with a WS row.

Using the 3-Needle Bind-Off, BO front and matching back shoulder sts.

Sleeve (Make 2):

With smaller needles, CO 36 (36, 36, 40, 40) sts.

Work k1, p1 ribbing for 2″ and inc 4 sts evenly across last row of ribbing, ending with a WS row. (40 (40, 40, 44, 44) sts)

Switch to larger needles.

Set-up Row (RS): K11 (11, 11, 13, 13), pm, work the lace and cable panel across next 18 sts, pm, k last 11 (11, 11, 13, 13) sts.

Inc 1 st at each end every 4 rows 30 (32, 35, 36, 38) times. (100 (104, 110, 116, 120) sts)

Cont even until piece measures 19 (19, 19, 20, 20)”. BO all sts loosely.

Finishing:

Neckband:

With smaller circular needle and starting from center back neck, pick up and knit 110 (112, 114, 166, 118) sts.

Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1″. BO all sts loosely.

Sew the sleeves in place. Sew side seams. Sew sleeve seam. Weave in all ends. Block sweater to size.
