Hadley uses two-color brioche knitting and garter stitch to form a “checkerboard” pattern. The checkerboard pattern is arranged in tiers diagonally and form staircases on both ends of the scarf. The garter stitch squares are also knitted in the middle of the scarf diagonally. The result is a stunning scarf that looks great on both sides!

Special Stitches
Brk (brioche knit): Knit the stitch that was slipped in the previous row together with its yarn over.
Brp (brioche purl): Purl the stitch that was slipped in the previous row together with its yarn over.
sl1yo – slip 1, yarn over
- following a k or brk st: bring the working yarn to the front of the work, slip the next stitch purl-wise, then bring the yarn over the needle and the slipped stitch to the back, work the following stitch.
- following a p or brp st: working yarn is already in front, slip the next stitch purl-wise, then bring the yarn over the needle and the slipped stitch, bring the yarn back around to the front, work the following stitch.
Two-Color Cable Cast On
Hold LC and DC tog, make a slip knot and slide it on the left-hand needle. Knit into the slip knot with LC, place the new knitted st onto left needle.
Step 1: Bring the DC from behind and over the LC thread, knit into the gap bet last 2 sts, and place the new knitted st onto the left needle loosely.
Step 2: Bring the LC from behind and over the DC thread, knit into the gap bet last 2 sts, and place the new knitted st onto the left needle loosely.
Step 3: Rep step 1 and step 2 until required sts cast on.
Pattern Notes
In brioche knitting, a stitch with its yarn over is considered ONE stitch. The yarn over is never counted separately.
One brioche row consists of 2 rows, one worked in Light Color (LC) and the other in Dark Color (DC).
Half of the stitches are worked in one row and the other half of the stitches that were slipped in the former row are worked in the following row.
Two rows are worked for each counted row that appears on the face of the fabric. When you need to count rows, count only the stitches going up one knit column.
I use the brioche stitch terminology developed by Nancy Marchant. I highly recommend her brioche knitting books and her Craftsy online classes.

Have read this over and over, but I can’t figure it out. What is the setup row? Row 1 doesn’t make sense to me because you can’t do a BRK from the cast on. At least, I don’t know how you would. Can someone please help me? Thank you.
