Plaid Prep Clutch

This little plaid clutch is super preppy but really fun! The top closes with a big leather button, which really adds some style. This type of plaid knitting is easy since the vertical stripes are done afterwards with a crochet hook. The perfect gift for the preppy girl on your list. This clutch matches the Plaid Prep Tote featured in the October 2018 issue.

Pattern Notes

This clutch is worked in the round from the top down.

Purl columns form the channels for the vertical component of the plaid.

The bottom of the bag is closed with a 3-Needle Bind Off after the vertical lines are worked with a crochet hook.

A fabric lining and a large pedestal button finish the bag.

Pattern

Bag

With MC, CO 104 sts, PM, join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist.

Begin working from chart. Rep Rows 1-42 of chart twice.

When chart is complete, create vertical lines.

Note: That first purl column of chart is the side folding stitch (so there are two, one for each side) and does not get a slip stitch column. Follow the photos for vertical column colors. From the RS, *insert crochet hook into the bottom purl stitch. Draw up a loop of contrast color yarn. Insert the hook into the next purl stitch and draw up a loop, then pull it through the first loop. Rep from * all the way up the purl column.

Once all vertical lines are complete, arrange sts so that a purl folding stitch is at each end and remaining sts are divided on each end of circ needle. P1, then work 3-Needle BO over all knit sts to last st, p1, pull last st over the just-purled st.

Break yarn and draw through last st on needle.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Optional: With CC3, using crochet hook, work a slip stitch just under the CO row of the top edge, all around.

Lining

From both fabric and interfacing, cut pieces meas 11” wide and 13” tall.

Fuse interfacing to wrong side of fabric. Fold in half and sew sides with a 0.5” seam allowance. Fold down 0.5” of top edge to wrong side and press.

Insert lining into bag, pushing corners of lining into corners of bag. Using needle and thread, slip stitch lining into bag.

Attach button to front.

Using crochet hook and color of your choice, make a single crochet chain 6” long.

Fold in half and attach ends to back of bag, then loop over button to close.
