First Snowfall Sweater

Simple cable panels stand out from an Irish Moss stitch background in this ruggedly classic pullover. The fit is relaxed and casual for a great weekend pullover.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Small (Medium, Large) to fit chest size 34-36” [86.5-91.5 cm] (38-40” [96.5-101.5 cm], 42-44” [106.5-112 cm]); Finished chest 40” [101.5 cm] (44” [112 cm], 47” [119.5 cm])

Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stocking st with larger needles

Materials

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool Worsted (100% wool; 210 yards [192 meters]/100 grams): #00202 Aran (7, (8, 9) balls)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) and US size 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: 3 stitch holders, cable needle

Abbreviations

C6B: Slip next 3 stitches onto cable needle and leave at back of work. K3, then K3 from cable needle.
C6F: Slip next 3 stitches onto cable needle and leave at front of work. K3, then K3 from cable needle.
Inc(s): Increase 1 stitch by knitting into front and back of next stitch.
K2tog: Knit next 2 stitches together.
P2tog: Purl next 2 stitches together.
P2togtbl: Purl next 2 stitches together through back loops.

Cable Panel A (worked over 9 sts)
Row 1 (RS): K9.

Shape V-Neck
Row 1 (RS): Pat across 34 (37, 39) sts, p2tog, k5, inc 1 st in next st. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Row 2: K1, p6, k1, pat to end of row.
Row 3: Pat to last 9 sts, p2tog, k7.
Rows 4-9: Rep rows 2-3 3 times more.
Row 10: Rep Row 2.
Row 11: Pat to last 9 sts, p2tog, C6F, k1.
Rows 12-13: As Rows 2-3.

Back

Work from ** to ** as given for Front.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures same length as Front to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders
Keeping cont of pat, bind off 9 (11-12) sts beg 2 next rows, then bind off 11 (12-13) sts beg following 2 rows. Bind off rem 45 sts, dec 7 sts evenly across as you cast off.

Sleeves
With smaller needles, cast on 50 sts.
Work 3” [7.5 cm] in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Front, ending with a 2nd row and inc 25 sts evenly across last row. (75 sts)
Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as follows:
Row 1 (RS): K2, p2, k2, p1, work row 1 Cable Panel A, p1, (k2, p2) twice, k2, (p1, work row 1 Cable Panel A) twice, p1, (k2, p2) twice, k2, p1, work row 1 Cable Panel A, p1, k2, p2, k2.

Cont even in pat until work from beg measures 18½” [47 cm], ending on a WS row.

Shape Top
Keeping cont of pat, bind off 9 sts beg next 8 rows. 21 sts rem (saddle strip).
Cont in Cable Panel pat across 21 saddle strip sts until strip measures length (when slightly stretched) to fit across shoulder seam, ending on a WS row. Bind off, dec 4 sts evenly across as you cast off.

Finishing

Pin all pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth leaving cloth to dry.
Sew saddle strips to shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves.

Left Back Neck Edging
With RS facing and larger needles, join yarn to 8 sts on left front st holder for back neck edging.
Cont in pat until piece measures length (when slightly stretched) to fit across top edge of left sleeve saddle strip and across to center back neck edge, ending on a WS row. Bind off, dec 2 sts evenly across as you cast off.

Right Back Neck Edging
With RS facing and larger needles, join yarn to 8 sts on right front st holder for back neck edging.
Cont in pat until piece measures length (when slightly stretched) to fit across top edge of right sleeve saddle strip and across to center back neck edge, ending on a WS row. Bind off, dec 2 sts evenly across as you cast off.
Sew edging strips in position. Sew bound off ends of strips tog.
Sew side and sleeve seams. yarn ball
