Woodland Socks

These cozy socks are made of a sturdy tencel wool blend and feature a textured rib in the cuffs that continues down the top of the foot. Worked cuff-down, the yarn is a gradient and the color shifts can be worked gradually or abruptly to form subtle horizontal stripes depending on your preference.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 11” foot circumference and 10 ¾” long from back of heel to tip of toe; foot length is adjustable

Gauge: 28 sts and 40 rows = 4″ in St st in the round

Materials

Yarn: The Unique Sheep Tinsel Toes (50% wool, 50% tencel; 367 yards [336 meters]/125 grams): Nature Walk (4 or 5 mini skeins)
Needles: US size 2 (2.75 mm) 36” set of double-pointed or circular for magic loop method
Notions: Markers (m), stitch holder, tapestry needle

Special Stitches

5×2 Ribbing
Every rnd: [p2, k5] around.

Textured Ribbing
Rnd 1: [P2, K2, P1, K2] around.
Rnd 2: Rep Rnd 1.
Rnd 3: [P2, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1] around.
Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 3. 

Pattern Notes

These socks are worked cuff-down. The toes are grafted using Kitchener stitch.

Pattern

Ribbing

CO 63 sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Work in 5×2 Ribbing (see Stitch guide) until work measures 2 ¼”.

Cuff

Work in Textured Ribbing (see Stitch guide) until work measures 7” ending with a Rnd 3.

Heel

Note: Heel is worked back and forth on 31 sts.
Row 1: K3, [sl1, k1] 12 times, sl1, k3. Place remaining 32 sts on holder, turn work.
Row 2:  K3, p25, k3.
Row 3: K3, [sl1, k1] 12 times, sl1, k3.
Row 4: K3, p25, k3.
Repeat last 2 rows 15 more times.

Heel Shaping

Row 1: K20, ssk, turn, leaving rem sts unworked.
Row 2: P10, p2tog, turn, leaving rem sts unworked.
Row 3: K10, ssk, turn, leaving rem sts unworked.
Row 4: P10, p2tog, turn, leaving rem sts unworked.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all heel edge sts have been worked. (11 sts rem)

Gusset Shaping

Knit across 11 sts, pick up 16 sts (1 st in each garter stitch ridge on the one side of the heel flap, ensuring to insert RH needle under 2 strands of yarn when picking up). Work in est patt across 32 sts on holder, pick up 16 sts along other side of heel flap in the same way. (75 sts)
Arrange sts on needles so that needle 1 has 21 sts, needle 2 has 31 pattern stitches and needle 3 has 22 sts.
Rnd 1: Knit until 3 sts left on needle 1, k2tog, k1, knit across needle 2 in est patt, on needle 3 k1, ssk, knit to end of row.
Rnd 2: Knit all sts on needle 1, work in est patt on needle 2 and knit all sts on needle 3.
Rep Rnds 1 & 2 until needle 1 has 15 sts and needle 2 has 16 sts.

Foot
Rep Rnd 2 until sock measures 2” before desired foot length.

Toe Shaping

Dec Row: Knit until 3 sts remain on needle 1, k2tog, k1, knit sts on needle 3 in est patt, on needle 3 k1, ssk, knit until end of row.
Rep Rnd 2.
Rep last 2 rnds until 21 sts rem. Graft toe using Kitchener st.
