Sapphire Shawl

This elegant shawl was inspired by the birthstone of September: sapphire. The lace pattern is reminiscent of large sapphires surrounded by smaller stones. The triangular shawl is knit from the top down using a single pattern with a long repeat.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 80” wingspan x 40” depth from center, blocked.

Gauge: 28 sts and 36 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st before blocking

Yarn:

Super fine weight yarn Knit Picks Capretta (80% Fine Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon; 230 yards [210 meters]/50 grams): 25597 Celestial, 5 balls.

Needles: US size 2 (2.75 mm): circular

Abbreviations

k – knit

yo – yo

ssk – slip, slip, knit

k2tog – knit two sts together

s2kp – slip two sts as if to knit 2 together, knit one, pass slip stitch over

(k1, yo, k1) in next st – knit one, yarn over, knit one in next stitch

RS – right side

WS – right side

CO – cast on

Pattern Notes

Shawl is worked with a central stitch and 2-st Garter edge on each side.

Repeats are outlined in red.

RS rows are charted. All WS rows are: k2, p to last 2 sts, k2.

Pattern

CO 2 sts.

Knit 6 rows, turn 90 degrees and pick up 3 sts along the side of the work, then 2 sts from the CO edge – 7 sts.

 

Work Rows 1-16 of Set-up Chart once – 39 sts.

Work Rows 1-72 of the Body Chart 3 times, or as many as desired.

Work Rows 1-18 of the Edge Chart.

BO loosely purlwise.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block. yarn ball
