Knitted Cast-on

  1. Knit a stitch as normal, but DO NOT slip stitch from left needle
  2. Place the newly formed stitch back on the right needle back on left needle without twisting it.

Repeat Steps 1-2 until you have the desired number of stitches.

For more information: tutorial (from simple-knitting.com) and video.

Knitting with beads (crochet hook method)

  1. Work to the stitch indicated to place a bead
  2. Slide the bead onto the crochet hook

Pattern Notes

The shrug is started with a provisional cast-on from the center back working flat, then the piece is joined in the round out to work the long, tapered sleeves that partially cover the palm. Then, the provisional cast-on is unraveled and the shrug is completed working the other sleeve.

On a delicate lace mesh background a strip is worked in a floral lace stitch interspersed with many little shiny beads.

The work is completed with a beaded picot bind off.

Pattern

Right Sleeve

Using the Provisional CO method, CO 55 (61, 67, 73, 85, 91) sts.

Work 3 rows in St st.

Next Row: P25 (31, 37, 43, 55, 61) sts, PM, work Row 1 (WS) of Cristallo patt (worked flat) over next 17 sts, PM, p to end.

Work across rows as foll:

Work the first st as a Side Beaded Picot (1 picot every other RS row), work in Lace Mesh patt to m, work in Cristallo patt to next m, work in Lace Mesh patt to 1 st before end, work the last st as another Side Beaded Picot (1 picot every other WS row). Insert a lifeline on first RS row.

Work 71 (75, 78, 84, 91, 94) rows as est. The piece should meas 8 (8½, 8¾, 9½, 10¼, 10½)” / [20 (21, 22, 23.5, 25.5, 26.5) cm] from lifeline.

Join to work the piece in the rnd, decreasing the 2 selvedge sts: k2tog, work in Lace Mesh patt to m, work in Cristallo patt (worked in the rnd) to next m, work in Lace Mesh patt to 2 sts before end, ssk, place marker for beg of rnd – 2 sts dec’d; 53 (59, 65, 71, 83, 89) sts.

Cont working in the rnd as foll:

Decrease Rnd: K2tog, work in Lace Mesh patt to m, work in Cristallo patt to next m, work in Lace Mesh patt to end – 1 st dec’d; 52 (58, 64, 70, 82, 88) sts.

Rep Dec Rnd every 8 (7, 5, 5, 4, 4) rnds 17 (23, 29, 29, 41, 41) more times – 35 (35, 35, 41, 41, 47) sts.

Using the Picot Bind Off with Beads method, BO all sts.
