Stunning Stranded Ornaments

These baubles are knit in the round with Scandinavian-inspired stranded colorwork. They are a quick intermediate project and a great way to use up leftover yarn. These ornaments make for ideal tree decorations, or you can knit smaller version to use a present toppers.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size:  3” high x 10” circumference (17.5 x 25.5 cm)

Gauge: 26 sts x 28 rows = 4” (10 cm) in colorwork stockingette in the round

Materials

Yarn:

Fine Weight Yarn Cascade 220 Sport (100% wool; 164 yards [150 meters]/50 grams): #8895 Christma Red (MC, 1 skein), #8505 White (CC, 1 skein)
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) double pointed needles
Notions: 4 stitch markers, stuffing

Special Stitches

M1L: Make 1 left leaning increase by picking up the bar between the next 2 stitches from front to back and knitting it through the back of the stitch.
M1R: Make 1 right leaning increase by picking up the bar between the next 2 stitches from back to front and knitting it through the front of the stitch.

Pattern Notes

All four of the baubles are worked exactly the same, knit in the round from the bottom to top, the chart or written instructions are repeated four times around the bauble. It is best to start stuffing the bauble when you get to round 33 before the gap gets too small to fit the stuffing in.

Striped Bauble Pattern

Leaving an 8” tail and using MC cast on 12 sts placing a stitch marker after every 3rd stitch. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist.

Finishing

Place the tail from the cast on onto a needle and thread through the cast on stitches to tighten the hole and secure.
To make the hanging loop pick up and knit 3sts from the top of the bauble, using two of the dpns knit a 4” Icord, bind off the 3sts and sew the end to the top of the bauble close to where the sts were picked up. yarn ball
